Our loving mother, grandmother, wife, aunt and friend, age 65, returned home to family and friends on Saturday, August 8, 2009, after a battle with diabetes and cancer.
Betty was born on December 22, 1943, to Charles and Reba Freeman Wandell. Her father passed away before she was born. Betty grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from West High School in 1961. She married Larry Edward Burningham (later divorced) and together their family grew to three children: two boys and one girl. Larry and Betty raised their three children in Cottonwood Heights. She married David L. Brown on March 2, 1994 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Later their marriage was solemnized in the LDS Salt Lake Temple.
Betty was known for her great smile and her positive attitude. She took great pleasure in cheering people up. She frequently would break out in her own rendition of Shirley Temple’s “Animal Crackers in my Soup” to help bring a smile to your face. She was a wonderful example to her children, never losing faith and enduring to the end. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was the type of member that served diligently. She raised three teenagers as a single mother and did so with great success. For 20 years she worked as the secretary at the Cottonwood Mortuary helping many who had lost a loved one. It was a job that was perfect for her since she was so caring to people. Those whom she encountered could feel her love and her concern. She finally retired due to her decline in health. Later in life she found a new found love of spoiling her four grandchildren and enjoying watching her children face the challenges of parenthood. She and Dave loved to travel and visited many great destinations. She would especially get excited when she and Dave would travel to Nashville, Tennessee. She loved a good mustard burger and a good BLT from Subway and we cannot forget orange chicken. She loved to cook and we all will miss her famous lasagna that she would make every Christmas. She began a tradition of decorating ginger bread houses with her grandchildren and giving them PJ’s as a present on Christmas Eve. She also was an avid University of Utah Football fan and enjoyed going to Rice-Eccles Stadium with her husband to see the Utes play. As a mother she was loved and as a friend she was cherished, to all she will truly be missed.
Betty is survived by her husband David L. Brown; three children, Brian Burningham, Brandon (Brandy) Burningham and Marcela (Jeff) Brinkerhoff; three step-children, Kevin (Corina) Brown, Gary (Shelly) Brown, and Dan Brown; four grandchildren Braxton, Brinlee, Breann Burningham and Sofia Brinkerhoff; and three step-grand children. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and many, many friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, mothers-in-law; Rose Burningham, Ethel Brown, and her brother, Charles “Chuck” Wandell.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 12, 2009, 11:00 .m. at the Butler 11th Ward, 1845 East 7200 South. Friends may call from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. the day of the service at the church. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
Her children also invite you to a celebration of her life on Saturday, August 22, 2009 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive, Holladay, Utah.
The family wishes to thank Life Path Hospice and Wasatch Dialysis for their loving care of Betty. In lieu of flowers family suggests you donate to your favorite charity or the National Kidney Foundation at www.kidneyut.org.
Betty, keep smiling and we look forward to seeing you again someday!
