Ernest H. Schanzlin: a thoughtful, kind, and loving family man.
Ernest H. Schanzlin died peacefully on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 in San Diego California. He was 91 years old.
He was born on September 27, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio where he was raised by his two loving parents, Herman and Marie. Both of his parents were immigrants and they raised him to have a deep appreciation for the opportunities that were available to him in this country. He was a hard working teenager, but soon realized the importance of a good education. Following high school at Cathedral Latin in Cleveland, he enrolled in the engineering program at Case Institute of Technology where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1940. After graduation, he went to work for Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pa, working as a metallurgist.
During his last year of college, he met his lifelong soul mate, Dorothy and they were married on Valentine’s Day 1942. These were the early days of World War II and he left his job at Westinghouse to work on the war effort at Pesco Products in Cleveland. He headed up a team of engineers who developed the hydraulic systems for the high altitude aircraft which eventually dominated the air war in Europe and the Pacific. After the war, he continued as the Chief Engineer at Pesco until 1959, when he accepted the position as the Vice President and Chief Engineer at Tuthill Pump Company where he worked until his retirement in 1982. Over his work career he received many honors and awards. He served as the President of the Hydraulic Institute in the early 80’s. He was also active in community service including serving several terms as Trustee for the town of Olympia Fields, IL.
Ernie enjoyed his retirement to the fullest. After retirement he and Dorothy moved to Albuquerque New Mexico until 2002 when they moved to Lake San Marcos. Ernie has always been a golf enthusiast, but after retirement he made it his avocation. In fact even up until this last January he played golf at least three days per week.
Ernie is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 68 years, his son David and his wife Nancy (La Jolla, CA), his daughter Mary Lynn Loechl and her husband Tim (El Dorado Hills, CA,) and five grandchildren Gina Loechl Martino (Fremont, CA), Steven Loechl (Walnut Creek, CA), Meredith Schanzlin Packer (Pasadena, CA), Michael Schanzlin (New York, NY), and Matthew Schanzlin (San Diego).
Services are planned for March 20, 2010 at All Hallow’s Catholic Church in La Jolla, California followed with interment at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.
Friends are invited to post their remembrances, photos, and condolences at www.pacificbeachchapel.com In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent a favorite charity in Ernie’s memory.
