EASTON-----Daniel J. O'Reilly, 87, a purple heart recipient of WWII and a retired homicide detective for the MDC Police, died Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at home under the care of his family. He was the husband of Dorothy (Boyle) O'Reilly for 63 years.
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada on April 7, 1924, a son of the late John and Grace O'Reilly, he was raised and educated in Medford. A veteran of WWII, Dan served as a paratrooper for the US Army 462ND Parachute Field Artillery. A recipient of the purple heart, he participated in the liberation of the Philippines, Luzon.
Upon discharge, he was hired as a police officer for the City of Medford and after 1 year he transferred to the MDC Police Department where he worked for 36 years, retiring as a homicide detective.
Devoted to his family, Daniel was a member of the Erin Society of Boston, the VFW Post 2547 in Easton, the Disabled American Veterans, and Pine Oaks Golf Club of Easton. He was a former member of the Avon School Committee and enjoyed golfing and vacationing in Maine. He was a resident of Easton for the past 43 years.
In addition to his wife Dorothy, he is survived by five children, Deborah Gallagher of Marshfield, Daniel O'Reilly of Easton, David O'Reilly of Marshfield, Diane Scott of Scituate and Damon O'Reilly of Randolph; brother of Sister Elizabeth O'Reilly of Canada, Rod O'Reilly of Canada Mary Snow of FL. and the late Kathleen McGuire and Ned O'Reilly; also survived by four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at Kane Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 605 Washington Street (Rte.138) Easton, on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at Noon in the Holy Cross Church, 225 Purchase Street, Easton. Interment with military honors will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
