Peter Paul Sultis was born on July 14, 1923, in Dallas, Texas, to May Cowles and Chris Sultis. He graduated from Forest Avenue High School, Dallas, with honors. Rice Institute (University) offered him a football/baseball scholarship; however, his schooling was interrupted by three years of service as a First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. After service, he returned to Rice University in 1946 and played football on a co-championship team that won the Orange Bowl game in 1947.
Graduating from Rice University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree, he received his Master of Education degree from the University of Houston in 1951. Deciding to forgo a professional football career, Pete began teaching and coaching baseball and football for Baytown Robert E. Lee High School in 1947. For twenty years he served as the assistant football coach, the head baseball coach, and later Head football coach. In 1969 he was named Athletic Director, a position he held for seventeen years. He retired in 1985 after thirty-eight years of service with Goose Creek CISD.
Pete and his late wife, Georgia, were members of the Greek Orthodox Annunciation Cathedral in Houston until transferring their membership to Trinity Episcopal Church in 1973. An active member in his church, he participated as an elected member of the vestry and volunteered as an usher, greeter, and money counter.
Pete Sultis has always been interested in athletics and the values it brings to the participants. This was proven by his involvement in professional organizations such as the Texas High School Coaches Association (coach of the South All-Star Football Team, Director, elected to the "Hall of Honor") and Texas High School Athletic Directors Association (charter member, president, first recipient of the Athletic Director "Hall of Honor," selected as the Texas High School Athletic Director of the Year, and Southwest Region Nominee for National Athletic Director of the Year).
Sultis has been known for his involvement and dedication to the community through the Baytown Kiwanis Club (60+ years perfect attendance; president, Lt. Governor, Outstanding Kiwanian of the Year, Outstanding Lt. Governor's Award), Baytown Medical Center Hospital/Humana Hospital Director; Baytown YMCA (Director, Capital Campaign Chairman), Harris County Cancer Society (Board member, driver for cancer patients to M.D. Anderson), Goose Creek CISD (Board of Trustees), and Rice University (Board of Directors, "R" Association).
In addition, he served on the Harris County Grand Jury and his Masonic affiliations include Baytown Lodge #1192 and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Arabia Temple. Of special note was his election to Forest Avenue High School's Distinguished Alumni.
Pete always looked forward to Tuesdays with the GOOTS (Gathering of Old Toots), Kiwanis meetings on Thursdays, and his regular Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday night gatherings with his friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, brother, James Sultis; sister, Mary Sultis Fowler; brothers-in-law, Dr. Argero E. Pappas and Vasil Pappas; sisters-in-law, Frances Hibbert, Ellen Krell, and Faye Polos; and wife, Georgia Pappas Sultis, he is survived by his daughters, Barbara Sultis, of Baytown, Jane Sultis, of Austin, and Kristi Sultis Morris and husband, Paul, of Cedar Park, Texas; granddaughters, Payton Alexandra and Kendyl Elaine; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and special friends.
Peter Paul Sultis went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, April 9, 2012, after a life full of love, laughter, and "Sultis-isms." His favorite quote, which was oft stated to his daughters, was "Everything always happens for the best." Pete will be remembered as a loving father, grandaddy, brother, father-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, second father to many, "Mr. Pete" (as his players called him), and friend. He will definitely be missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2012, at Crespo and Jirrels Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Trinity Episcopal Church, with Reverend Nick Novak officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service. Entombment will be at Memory Garden Mausoleum. Honoring the family as pallbearers will be Gary Herrington, Ted McCall, Jr., George Polos, Dr. Bill Krell, Dr. John Krell, Paul Morris, Todd Lundquist and Marvin Guy. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl "Bubba" Currie, James Gordon and The Members of the "GOOTS."
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Building Fund, 5010 North Main, Baytown, TX 77521.
