Oliver Barres, 90, of Bethlehem died on April 24, 2012 at Holy Family Manor Nursing Home in Bethlehem, PA. He was born in Bethlehem on July 31, 1921; son of the late Oliver Morgan and Matilda Mary (Ritter) Barres. Mr. Barres is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Marjorie Jane (Catchpole) Barres. He was predeceased by his sister Jeannette Barres Zug, his brothers, Herster Barres and Theodore Barres, his nephew, Oliver Barres Zug, and his grandson John Oliver Cotter. He graduated from Phillips Academy (Andover) in 1939 and Yale University in 1943. Mr. Barres later earned a Master's Degree in Divinity from the Yale Divinity School and Masters Degrees in History from Lehigh University and Fordham University. During WWII, Mr. Barres was an ambulance driver with the American Field Service in Italy and Northern Africa. He and his wife are convert Protestant ministers who came into the Catholic Church in 1955. He is the author of One Shepherd, One Flock, the story of their conversion and worked at the Propagation for the Faith for Bishop Fulton Sheen. Mr. Barres will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family: his daughter Margaret Cotter and her husband Paul of Cohasset, MA and their sons Nate, John (who died on May 2, 2008), and Paul; Mary Riggs and her husband Robert of Oxford, MS and their daughter Diana McKinion; Catherine Cawthon and her husband Clark of St. Louis, MO, and their children Laura Vestal, William and Michael; Clare Gill and her husband Grandon of Tampa, FL, and their sons Thomas and Jonathan; Most Reverend John O. Barres, the Catholic Bishop of Allentown; William Barres and his wife Ann of Hingham, MA and their daughters Katherine and Elizabeth. A visitation will be held on Friday, April 27 from 6-8 PM at the Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM on Saturday, April 28 at Ss Simon and Jude Catholic Church 730 W. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. Interment will follow at Nisky Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bishop's Annual Appeal, Catholic Diocese of Allentown 1515 Martin Luther King Dr., P.O.
