To an E-6 whose career was drawing to a close, Vadm Calvert without expection was an officer and a gentleman. He called his enlisted men by their first names and they in turn served him with love and respect!

Admiral Calvert was my hero!

As one of fourteen black Midshipmen appointed to the Naval Academy in the Class of 1975, I was racially out-numbered; often humiliated and always intimidated. One day while on watch, I was called as Admiral Calvert's Mate. That experience changed my life forever!!!!

I never knew that a man with such power could be so thoughtful, humble and caring all in one. I thought the admiral was being nice to me because I was a Navy boxer!! I found out much later that Admiral Calvert made his mark on every heart that he touched!!! Forty years later, Admiral Calvert is still touching my heart and is my personal example of what it means to be a good American; a good father; a good friend; and a good human being!!!!

God truly blessed me to live today with the Admiral Calvert example of life at its best! God Bless Admiral Calvert's life, memory and legacy!

WITH MY LOVE, RESPECT AND BEST WISHES TO HIS ETERNAL MEMORY!

Early in my career, I had the honor to work with Jim as he Chaired our Board at Aqua- Chem Inc. He was an inspiration to me. An absolute stellar leader, hero and friend.

The Navy and the world has lost one of its absolute best leader of men. I served with Admiral Calvert in the Pentagon when he was the Op-616 Head and again as the Director of Op-61. I was his yeoman at the time of Nancy's death and he and I had several moving discussions regarding the loss and how he would face the future with his children without her. The leadership, mentoring, caring, and devotion to duty if this man was the key to my making Warrant Officer from Petty Officer First Class. He, on several occasions offered me fatherly advice on staying in the Navy and also concerning my relationship with my parents. My future life after Adm Calvert was guided by this man's influence. My wife and I visited him at Beverly two years ago in May. I was saddened by his state at the time and left with tears in my eyes. There was never a better human being than James Calvert and there will never be. It is no secret that I truly loved this man and will never forget him.
