Leland was always Archie to me. We were roommates and good friends during our time together at both Frederick Military Academy and Emery and Henry College. We had many good times together. My wife Louise also knew Archie well during those times when we were all so very young. I will miss him and think often of those good times. Please except our thoughts and prayers.

We just learned about Leland from Aunt Kay. We cannot tell you how heavy our hearts are at the distressing news. We knew Leland well enough to know that he was a wonderful man, a loving father, and a good friend. We understand the emptiness you must be feeling now, and our prayers are with you and the members of all of your families. We pray that all of you will find peace in your memories of him, and the

I met Leland in 1998 while I was the Executive Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Leland served as the Treasurer of our Board of Directors. He was one of the first people I met when moving to Virginia Beach and I have to admit one of the kindest and most genuine. I am reminded of him daily - as I have sitting on my desk a dish Leland gave me depicting one of his beautiful ducks. He will be

Donna, Noel, and family,
Leland and I went back to elementary school and even though I did not see him that much during our adult years he always has held a special place in my heart. He was a charming, witty soul and will be missed by all that had the honor of knowing him. I have a parent conference this afternoon so I will not be able to attend his memorial service but my thoughts and prayers will be with you.

I have had the opportunity to know Leland for the past 3 years--for that I am most grateful.
If I were to describe Leland in words what would they be--sensitive, gentle, creative, intelligent, caring, quiet? It would be these and more.
With great sadness I share in his loss and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to Noel and all of Leland's family.

Dear Noel and Family. Leland and I were fraternity brothers and friends at The University of Georgia. It was with a heavy heart and saddened spirit that I learned of his passing. I remember his having a warm smile and a kind word to all. The world is a better place for his having walked among us. My thoughts are with you all.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Leland. My friendship and affection for Leland extend beyond words that I can fit in this message. Please know that Darla and I have been praying daily for you and Leland's family. If there is anything at all that I can do for you, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I have held off calling you in the knowledge that you must be swamped with calls and visits. I look forward, however, to seeing you on Wednesday. Again, I extend my love and condolences to you. David

I am saddened by Leland's loss to us and all who knew and loved him. I knew Leland in Norfolk and we were at Frederick and Emory & Henry together. He was a good friend. An oil painting he gave Darlene and I for our wedding gift has always hung in our home. God grant us peace and understanding. Tom Turner

It was my privilege to work with Leland everyday. It will never be the same without his smiling face coming through the door everyday. I only had the honor of working in the same office with him for about a year, but during that time he became one of my favorite people to work with. He always had a smile and a kind word no matter what the day brought. I will truly miss him and the times we talked

Leland was one of the first artists I met growing up in Virginia Beach. I remember looking up at his mantle when little Leland and I would play at his apartment on 52nd 1/2 street. He would always have a newly completed piece, and he was always proud of his work. His attention to detail was evident to me at an early age, and I held great respect for his talent as an artist. Leland, thank for your art, the

Leland holds a special place in my heart for the kindness and selfless, diligent support he extended to my family during a period of severe adversity a few years ago. We share in the sorrow of all who knew Leland as we did, as a person of exceptional character and quality, and we grieve especially for his family in their profound loss. We were all privileged to have known him.

There is now a hole in the universe where my friend Leland used to be. To know him was to love him. Now all of his family and friends will struggle to fill that void in the fabric of their lives. We will wonder what Leland would say. We will wonder what Leland would do. He would say something to make bad things better. He would find the honorable path or the ethical answer. Life will go on. We will

To Leland's children and wife and family - please accept my genuine sympathy for your loss. Leland was a good and gentle man who committed many quiet acts of kindness during his life. I treasure the sympathy card I received from him a few years ago after my husband died, the eloquent words he used to sum up the essence of Joe and the life he had lived. I have saved it for my children so that years from now,

I am shocked as yet another life long friend has died in the past twelve months. Mike Cannon, whom Leland knew well having grown up two blocks apart on Shirland Ave. in the Meadowbrook section of Norfolk, died six months ago. Both gravitated to the oceanfront as adults, Leland as a banker and Mike as, among other things, the owner of The Shack. I also grew up two blocks away, down Runnymede Rd. from Leland. The Simmons lived in a large,
