Our family was privileged to be neighbors with the Shorts when they lived in Evanston. I still recall his West-Texas drawl and wide grin. He exemplified a subtle homespun wisdom about many of the mysteries of everyday life, and showed great kindness to our family. As kids, we were honored to help out by stuffing envelopes and sending out information on his latest literary project. He is the only person I know that can get away with driving around with a "Thou Art God" bumper sticker plastered to the back of his car. The Short family is fortunate to have had him for a father and husband, and I will continue to think of him often.
