Memories & Candles
Richard Mikell was a founding father of Paddlesports in South Carolina. He led us as President of the Paddlesports Association for countless years. Richard was known as the "Papa Bear" of Paddlesports.
His gentle spirit and kind heart led us all. He was a true friend to each and everyone of us and there was nothing he would not do for any one.
He gave to us by sharing his love for the outdoors, the rivers, the woods, the lakes and

Bought my first kayak from Richard and enjoyed paddling with him. He was a champion of South Carolina rivers and conservation and will be sorely missed.

Richard and I go back a long way. All the way to the 70s when we were both employed by Farm Credit. We spent many an hour discussing the environment, Preservation of Congaree Swamp and our rivers, etc.. Richard was also fundamental in my developing a love of paddling. I will always remember that smile and twinkle in his eye.

I have many memories of when I was a scout with Jane in Mrs. Mikell's troop. We did many activities at their home on the river and Richard and David and the dad were always there. My son Alexander is friends with his niece Janine. Richard and his family will be in my thoughts. Debbie Walker Manos

I did not know Mr. Mikell very well, but every time I saw him he always had a smile on his face. I will always remember he lead us on our very first White Water rafting trip in the mountains.(years ago) I have never been again, I'm older and not that brave. But at least I can say I done it. Take care, and keep those memories close.
