What a great guy. What a horrible tragedy. . . . but, I've learned, a spouse and children can survive and persevere. Our hopes go with you.

Frauke, Nic & Elle We have nothing but positive loving memories of so many trip to Pittsburgh with you and Joe. Shooting hoops in our backyard last summer was one of our many wonderful times. He and you are friends for life of Lyn and I. I am so grateful for the time I did have with Joe. Those 2 magnificent kids who he adored with all his heart are his way of staying with us always. Love, John and Lyn Mulroy

Frauke: Joe's departure...how tragic...far too young and too soon! When I heard what happened, I was instantly reminded that life isn't fair and what we know to be can change in a second. I've struggled for days to find the right words to comfort and help you find peace. While we know he is in a wonderful place with no pain and suffering, it doesn't help fill the void or keep you from loving and missing him. Please know that we are keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers. Most sincerely, we are,

I was a med student with Joe at Northwestern and remember him as truly one of the nicest, most pleasant people with a great sense of humor,day-in and day-out. He knew how to keep a balance between work and fun, and we all benefitted from it. I am sending prayers to support you here on earth and to lift up joy to Joe in heaven. What a blessing he was to us!

Joe and I started our first month of internship together in the ICU at Chapel Hill. His humor, friendship and camaraderie made what could have been a tough month into a wonderful experience and life-long memory. We will all miss him.

Joe and I were 6 year meds together at Northwestern. Everybody loved him- not a mean bone in his body. He was a great athlete- we played on the same indoor soccer team, and we played a lot of touch football together in med school- I remember that his team rarely lost- so much so that I nicknamed him "Joe Montana." He seemed to attract nicknames- I recall he also was nicknamed "Spike" and "Joey Lobo"- I can't remember why.
