My earliest memory of Cousin Mary Lou was in about 1941 when I was 5 years old. I recall her visiting our farm near Elbert, CO, where she rode Queen, the horse I later learned to ride upon. Ah, Mary Lou. Out fun-loving cousin. She always lived on the edge, whatever that edge mignt be. My first recolection was from Topeka when I was five years old. Mary Lou and Virginia were best friends, and they haad a "secret hiding place in Grandma's backyard. Iwas not allowed in. Warren was. That really bent my nose. Always on the lookout for adventure, on the Elbert farm she took all we girl cousins on a trek to the tiny town

My sister and I were two years younger than Mary Lou, but we wanted to do everything she did. When we lived in Kansas City, Kansas, at a very early age, we were interested in boys, because Mary was.
