Elaine was one of those rare people who made you feel you were an extra-special friend - later to find that so many others thought the same thing.
She visited us regularly in Calcutta, in the 1960s, when I was a child and in 1971 I landed on her in Paris- 18 years old with a broken motorbike, thinking I was riding back to India. I spent 3 weeks with her, which was a pivotal, magical time in my life. So

Elaine was a great painter and a very intelligent, cultured, creative, imaginative, witty, entertaining person. It's crushing to know that we will never see her again, that we will never hear that voice again. I urge her family please to take good care of her paintings and do everything they can to preserve her artistic legacy.
