Dear Mary, It was our great pleasure to have worked with Phil over the past decade in his role with the Computational Neuroscience Meetings. We have such fond memories of dining with the two of you in foreign and exotic places, and will dearly miss his playful side! He was an inspiration to so many students and young faculty members, and will be fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Phil was a powerful mentor when I was a graduate student at the U of C. He took a chance on me and helped me discover a love of teaching. His sense of humor and no-nonsense advice helped everyone around him to do their best work. I'm saddened to hear of his death and my thoughts are with you.

Dear Family, My deepest condolences for your loss. What a great blessing that he was a part of your lives; and how fortunate for the Computational Neuroscience community that he gave so much of his intellectual wealth to help design and build the field. I pray you will find comfort in the memory of these blessings, as he shall never be forgotten.

Phil was the person who had lot to do with bringing me to Chicago as a young professor. For all of my formative years, he served as department chair. Always exceeding fair, courteous and kind, he served as a mentor to me. I will never forget several of his one phrase definitive answers to what I considered complex situations I had found myself in. I would go to him, after he stepped down as chair to seek advice. Before me,

Phil was an essential figure in the growth and expansion of computational neuroscience. For almost 20 years he

Dear Family, The passing of Phil is unexpected and leaves too much unsaid. I feel like I never really thanked him properly for all that he did for me. I will always remember him as an outstanding mentor whose commitment towards his students was unsurpassed. His passing is a great loss for me and for the scientific community as a whole. My thoughts go out to you.

Dear Family, my sympathy with your loss. I think of Phil as a wonderful colleague and he was indeed a true gentleman. As a scientist he contributed significantly and without him, initiatives such as a committee on CNS would not have existed. We will miss him but I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know him and work with him, Wim van Drongelen
