Mr. Porter was probably the best teacher I had at HPC - and definitely one of the most memorable. It doesn't surprise me that he had so many friends. He was "one in a million".

One of the long standing family stories is about my birh. I was born the day after Christmas. My father had taken my two older sisters to our Grandmother's house to visit on Christmas Day. My mother always told me that she was taking the Turkey out of the oven and went into labor. Uncle Buddy was the only one around to take her, (and ultimately me), to the hospital. The story says that he piled my mom into his open air Jeep in the middle of Winter in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and served as the surrogate male during birth and delivery. Thanks Uncle Buddy for getting my mom, your beloved sister, to the hospital !!!

The weekend spent at Emerald Isle July 4th, 1964 was one of the great events of my life.
