Memorial service for David Alan Horner, 61, will be held Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. A burial will be held at a later date in West Lawn Cemetery, Racine, WI. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel is assisting the family.
Mr. Horner, husband of Carol Marcil Horner, died Wednesday, October 19, 2011. Born in Orlando, FL, he was a son of Richard Alfred and Joyce Check Horner. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir. He spent his career in construction equipment marketing.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, and wife of 27 years, are a son, Sean (Jennifer) Harris; two daughters, Shannon (Santana) Requena, Elizabeth (Justin) Horner McLean; five grandchildren; two brothers, Michael (Michelle) Horner and Dale Horner.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lutheran Hospice, 1505 Blanding Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

It was a privilege and a pleasure to have known Dave as a co-worker and as a good friend. Someone who knew Dave way longer than me, on hearing of his passing, said that he didn't believe Dave had a single enemy in the business world - a thoroughly nice guy. I'll miss our conversations.

I was so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. Almost two years ago at the family gathering in Atlanta --it was such a pleasure to chat with Dave and his wife Carol. We joked about how many years had passed since we had last seen each other. He will be sadly missed at this reunion and in the years ahead.

I worked with Dave directly at Gehl Company for a number of years and he was a great mentor to me as I began my career in construction equipment product development and marketing. He was a fine, fine man and is a tribute to the work and efforts he did for us and our industry.

About 4 years ago, Dave visited me in Santa Fe on his motorcycle. During his visit, we had an opportunity to relive some of the experiences we had shared as a family during a vacation to Albuquerque in December of 1970. We hiked down Sandia Mountain as we had done over 35 years earlier. For the duration of his stay with me, he could barely walk since he wasn't used to the altitude and the steepness of the mountain slope. On the last day of his visit, Dave followed me on his motorcycle to a small town South of Santa Fe called Madrid, which was the film location of one of his favorite movies called, "Wild Hogs". As we walked around town, he wanted me to point out the various landmarks from the movie. I took his picture standing outside of "Maggie's Diner" as a memento.

My brother ricky and I were down stairs in North Carolina and we weren't supposed to be down there. We were down there thinking we were sneeky and cool, then all of a sudden BAM theres Grandpa Dave. He was talking in his regular voice but i thought he was yelling at us, so i started crying and everything. I look back at it now and i'm like "Dang, was i a crybaby" I sit back and laugh.

Another memory was my very First motorcycle ride and i was so excited. I thought it was so cool that we could talk to each other through the helmets and listen to music at the same time. I loved that day.

Although as my big brother,Dave once in a while me some lame advice as I was naive, adventerous child. "Oh yeah, you can jump out of that tree: the limb's not that high." "Of course the water is deep enough for you to dive in."

Dave was first and foremost a mentor as well as an outstanding example to follow.

Every should have a "Big Brother" like Dave.

2004 I took my state boards for my EMT. I was scared to death and talked to Dave before I took my tests. He always told me "Don't over-react Shan, just stay calm and it will work out" I ended up failing one of my practicals and was hysterical. Before I went in to retake it I called Dave again. He always told me the same thing but it was always so comforting to hear his voice on the other end of the phone. I did pass my exam and when I got my certificate and patch in the mail he was the first person I called, he said "See Shan, I told you it would work out". Forever in my head will I hear his voice, especially now. "Stay calm Shan" I miss you dad.

Mostly boating related; the first time we met Dave was when he & Carol brought their boat up to the Bower family reunion to give us all a ride. Captain Dave! We had such a great time. Then the time He & Carol took us out to lunch via boat ride, he drove so slowly and the wake from the other boats tossed us around so much that I lost my hamburger in the bathroom. Then there was the 4th of July boat ride to watch the fireworks. Ah..... that was memorable. Thanks Dave. You made our lives more fun. And most of all, I see Dave in his daughter Beth, who has made my son very happy, and who I am now lucky to call my daughter-in-law. Rest in peace Dave.

Dave was my very first time to be an aunt. We sure enjoyed having him around. He always loved to have his picture taken and would get in front of the camera and give us a funny or weird looking face. In 1955 he and and brother Mike were both ring bearers in our wedding. I think they were 5 and 3 at the time and looked so cute in their little tuxes.

The last time I saw Dave was several summers ago while I was visiting Dick and Joyce. We had a wonderful visit with Dave, Carol and Beth and I very much enjoyed the pontoon boat ride around their beautiful lake.
