Memories & Candles
Dr. Cervo's words, encouragement, and love permeated everything he did. I still remember his sage advice, his fun teaching style, and his deep intellect. RIP Dr. Cervo.

Nathan took me under his brilliant wing during my time at Franklin Pierce in the early - mid 1970s. I was a young writer and poet, passionate and brash. After two years as my mentor, he recognized I needed to move on to greeener collegiate pastures and told me flat out, "You should transfere to Bard College in New York. The place is for talented kids creatively full of themselves, just like you." I did and it was. Thankfully, in

Dr. Cervo was a mentor, teacher and above all friend. I took every class he taught while a student at Franklin Pierce as often spent time rambling on Victorian poetry, Plato and Plotinus' aesthetic beauty theories and life itself. Even in graduate school, I used notes from his classes. When I visited family in CT, I would return with Italian pastries from one of his favorite bakeries.
As a English teacher and college professor today, I stand where I am due to his influence. He has made an indelible impression on me.

Of all the professors I had at FPC, Dr. Cervo stood out as the most memorable for his keen intellect and amusing repartee...the only professor that I had the longing to audit a class after graduation.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Cervo. I considered him a mentor... I had him for Composition and Rhetoric during the year I attended Franklin Pierce; those are now two of the courses I teach to undergrads. My own concept of what an undergraduate course in Composition and Rhetoric should be comes, in part, from my experiences with Dr. Cervo. I will always remember his insights on Robert Browning and Herman Melville. Dr. Cervo and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Cervo, taught many things about books and words, yet I live a quote to fill the gap.
“The test of a good teacher is not how many questions he can ask his pupils that they will answer readily, but how many questions he inspires them to ask him which he finds it hard to answer”
Alice Wellington Rollins

I spent a lot of time with Dr. Cervo between 1992-1994. He was my one on one Latin teacher, taught me Yeats, and helped me understand a great many things in between. My favorite moments were catching him somewhere unexpected and just talking. Dr. Cervo really helped me become the artist and intellectual I am now. I have always been grateful for his humor, his sly skewed outlook, and intelligence. I'm sorry for your loss, I just want to let you know that he made a significant difference in my life.

Nathan was always a pleasure to work with. I really liked it when I called at school and got his voicemail. He said his full name and then spelled out Cervo: C-E-R-V-O. I always got a kick out of that. Sometimes I would even call twice just to hear it. It was really cute! He will be missed and has been since he retired. God bless.

as a colleague of Nathan's in the English dept. at FPU, I remember him fondly - our particular connection was that he had studied under Marshall McLuhan and I had studied under Fr. Walter Ong,SJ, who had taught McLuhan - endearing and trying, brilliant and confounding, Nathan will always be remembered by me. My sincerest condolences to his family.
