Lewis William Short

Mr. Lewis William Short, 87, of 719 Fir Spring Drive, Waynesboro, PA died Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at his home. He had been in ill health for the last year and critically ill for two weeks. Born November 5, 1924 in Scotland, PA, he was the son of the late Richard A. and Hazel M. (Mills) Short. He attended Chambersburg schools and later served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Southern Philippines Liberation Campaign. During his military service he received many awards including: American Theatre Ribbon, European-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Battle Star and the Victory Medal. He and his wife, Pauline Evelyn (Kissel) Short, were married in 1996 in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chambersburg. Mr. Short worked for Letterkenny Army Depot, and later Landis Tool Company, where he worked as a boiler room engineer. After 36 years of employment he retired from Landis Tool Company in 1986. In retirement he worked for Wal-Mart, Waynesboro. He was a member of A.A.R.P., Owls Club Nest 1073, Waynesboro, Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, Waynesboro, Eagles Club Inc., Waynesboro and was a life member of William Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post # 695, Waynesboro. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Dennis W. Short, Chevy Chase, MD; two step-daughters, Lisa Bakner, Mont Alto, Sharon Webster, Waynesboro; 3 step-sons, Julius Kissel and Michael Kissel both of Shippensburg and Thomas Kissel, Fayetteville, PA, two grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, a sister, Patricia A. Johnson, Salunga, PA, a brother, Harry M. Short, Fayetteville, PA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his second wife Sylvia Short; his son Daniel Short and five brothers. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 25, 2012 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. The family will receive friend for one hour prior to the service, Saturday, in the funeral home. Military honors will be provided graveside by Charles Nitterhouse V.F. W. Post #1599, Chambersburg.
