COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Leon Garber, 88, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012, at the funeral home.
Leon passed away Saturday, March 31, 2012. The son of Tillie Morris Garber and Paul Garber, Leon was born on September 24, 1923 in Batesburg.
Leon graduated Batesburg-Leesville High School in 1939 and enrolled at Washington & Lee University at age sixteen. He completed his Degree in Commerce in 1943.
After graduating Washington & Lee, Leon enrolled at the U.S. Navy's Northwestern Midshipman's School. Upon graduation, he assumed his post as Lieutenant on the U.S. Naval transport ship LST 983. During his service on the 983, he completed a total of fifty-one missions, culminating in his transporting 50th Division Infantry to Gold Beach during the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1961.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Murphy Garber, whom he married in 1972, thus blending two families consisting of seven children, Rocky Garber, Rosann Garber, Joe Taylor (Stacey), Bruce Garber (Leslie), Steve Taylor (Betsy), Maxine Garber Fisher (Rayton) and Laura Taylor Callahan (Chuck); nine grandchildren, Jason, Erin, Brenna, Stephen, Dana, Leah, Ann, Erin and Megann; and two great-grandchildren, Sean and Callie. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Lifchez in 1968; his sisters, Sara Garber Bogo, Miriam Garber Kahn; and his brother, Julius.
From 1956 to 1989, Leon owned and operated Garber's Shoes in Columbia and Garber & Company in Allendale, SC. From 1989 to 1996, he was co-owner of South Carolina's premier court reporting firm, Garber Reporting Company.
During his lifetime, Leon was an active member of the Batesburg Civitan Club, the Capital City Club, the Windermere Country Club, the Columbia Country Club, the HOGS Golf Group at Fort Jackson, the Columbia Chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Golden K Kiwanis Club. Leon had been a member of the Tree of Life Temple since childhood, and was a friend of the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation. He was the oldest living active member of the Palmetto Chapter of Washington & Lee Alumni Association.

I remember Leon's grilled hamburgers on Sunday afternoons, 5:00 on the dot cocktails and the largest gathering of family I have ever had the pleasure of knowing on Christmas Eve. Leon loved having family and friends over for hotdogs and hamburgers. He especially loved his Happy Hour cocktails as I did and made wonderful vodka tonics for me. Gorgeous purple hydrangeas...cannot rememeber if this was Leon or Doris who grew these beautiful flowers.

My sympathy goes out to you Doris and your family. Leon was a good, kind and sweet man. When he would go to the Masters he always brought back a key chain for me. May God bless all of you during this time and my prayeras are with you.
