John E. Davis

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for John E. Davis, 84, a resident of Davenport will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division Street, Davenport. Burial will be in the National Cemetery Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be Monday, April 9, 2012 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan – McCabe – DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. A prayer service will be offered at 6:30 p.m. that all are encouraged to attend. There will be additional visitation at the church on Tuesday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Gathering Space.
John died peacefully on Good Friday, April 6, 2012, at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park, Davenport. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing.
John Emerson Davis was born October 15, 1927 in Courtland, N.Y. a son of Charles Roy and Marie (Schaper) Davis.
He was proud to have served our country as a Seaman 2nd class with the United States Navy.
John was united in marriage to Marilyn Joan Kalmer on August 18, 1951, in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Together they have been blessed with over sixty-years of marriage.
He is a retired Federal Employee, serving as a U.S. Postal Carrier for 26 years, retiring in 1984.
John was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church and the National Association of Letter Carriers. John believed in giving back and volunteered with numerous organizations over the years, most notably serving as coordinator for Meals on Wheels.
He was a die-hard Cubs fan, and would rarely miss the opportunity to watch them play. He and Marilyn also enjoyed traveling, and had many memorable trips.
Memorials may be made to the Our Lady of Victory Building Fund, Marquette Academy or to Meals on Wheels Program.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Marilyn; and children and their spouses, Rich and Janie Davis, Carterville, Illinois, Larry Davis, Davenport, and Diane and Jim Webb, Jr. East Moline, Illinois, a daughter-in-law, Betty Davis, Davenport; and seven loving grandchildren, John (Liz) Davis, Rebeccah, Chad, Megan (Zach) Whitecotton, Grant, Brooke and Thomas Davis
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Chuck.
