JANESVILLE--- John Edgerton Hough, 96, died at Mercy Hospital on July 29, 2012. He was born at 100 St. Lawrence Avenue in Janesville on July 5, 1916, to Dorothy Whitehead Hough and Azel Clarence Hough. He graduated from Janesville High School in 1933 and from Cornell University in 1937. In 1940 he married Vivian Swensson, who died in 1983. Their two children, Lawrence and Gordon, survive him. In 1988 he married Annette King Tiedemann, who died in 2009. His brother, Albert Hough, died in 2008. Five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, seven step-children, and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren also survive, as do his sister-in-law, Lois Hough, and her children and grandchildren.. John Hough worked at Hough Shade Corporation as a young man during school vacations and started his career there in the Sales Department upon his graduation from college, becoming president of the company when his father died in 1946. Hough Shade became Hough Manufacturing Corporation and then Hufcor under his leadership. He continued to have an active role in the management of the company after investors acquired it in the late 1970s and did not retire until 2009, when he was ninety-four. He remained on the board until his death He was particularly proud of the growth and transformation of the company from the porch shade business to a manufacturer of architectural partitions with world-wide distribution and subsidiaries or licensees in nineteen countries. The international growth of the company began in 1958 when he and Vivian made an extended trip to Australia and established relationships that continue to this day. In the late 1980's, after he was seventy years old, he started work on his crowning achievement, travelling to China and opening a market there for Hufcor products that continues to grow and to prosper. Until his retirement, he worked with great stamina and energy to develop and maintain international relationships for Hufcor Worldwide. He was a dedicated citizen of Janesville and active in the leadership of local organizations during six decades. In the 1940s and early 1950s, he was involved with local civil defense groups. He served on the board and was president of the local Boy Scout Council; the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was senior warden; the board of Milton College; and the board of Mercy Hospital, where he served for many years and, as chairman, led the expansion of its physical plant and services. He was a member of Janesville Rotary for over fifty years, which included terms as president. He served the Republican Party as city chairman in Janesville, as county and district chairman, as state treasurer and chairman, and as a member of the Republican National Committee. In the early 1950s, he joined the Young Presidents Organization, an organization of business executives, attending their conferences for many years and at times making presentations. Later he joined an organization of Young Presidents' alumni, the Chief Executives Organization, participating in their conferences every year. He was an avid traveler, both with Vivian and with Ann, for business and for pleasure in this country and abroad; he visited nearly every American state and about seventy-five countries. On his way he attended Rotary meetings in a great many cities, large and small. His lengthy descriptions of his travels, written en route, for his children and other family members, included accounts of one Winter and five Summer Olympic Games. He was an enthusiastic fan of University of Wisconsin athletics, attending their football games for nearly sixty years, including two trips to the Rose Bowl. His very wide circle of friends in Janesville, throughout the United States and abroad, regarded him as a gentleman, esteemed his company and friendship, valued his knowledge and judgment, and trusted his probity in matters both public and private. Since the 1980s he attended ROCK PRAIRIE CHURCH, where the funeral will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at 11 a.m. The burial at Oak Hill Cemetery will be private. Visitation will be at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY on Wednesday evening, August 1, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. He asked that those who wish to make a contribution should do so either to Rock Prairie Church or to Rotary Gardens. I was deeply saddened to learn of John's death and I would like to express my sincere sympathy to the Family. I will be for ever thankful to John who gave us the opportunity to become a Hufcor licensee years ago. I admire his dedication to Hufcor and its worldwide Partners. John now has a well deserved recognition as a true legend in our industry. What a great life-time achievement that will inspire and motivate us for many years.
