Ahh, Little Meek. I don't feel like I should be writing this for you. Not yet, anyway! But I am. You took us all by surprise and it is hard to comprehend that you are no longer guarding the gate on Geranium, always on the lookout when home. We anticipate you tearing around the corner of the kitchen door when the food bowls hit the floor! Or, dancing on your back paws waiting for your bowl to be set down next. And, of course, you would be the first to finish so you could try to steal a morsel of Zeus or Wilson's meal. You might be checking out the litter box for something of interest or searching for a pair of panties that didn't make it into the hamper. I see you contently snuggling with Kristen and Wilson not wanting to be disturbed. What I really miss is not having you beg for me to pick you up when I call out "who is ready to go to work?" in the morning. Wilson and Zeus are there, but where is my Meeka Cheeka Weeka Peeka Teeka? Where is my little girl? Where is that cute little member of Heavens Pets welcoming committee?
Well, I do believe in Heaven and I do believe that all of our beloved creatures are there waiting for us to join them. I'm sure you are hanging out with Barney and Chip. The three of you are all smiles, tails wagging, healthy and playing. I'll bet you even have a stuffed toy alligator to do who knows what with! (Some of us know what that "what" is!) There are trails to hike, ski boats to ride and swimming pools to run around! What fun you must be having!
Mika, you were our "first born." Your dad certainly knew what he was talking about when he said that we had to have a Maltese. He declared that Maltese were the perfect little pets. Of course, he was right! And, how he loved his little girl! He still does, we all do. That love will never fade.
Thank you for 12.5 happy years, fun times and the best of memories. (Your little legs hiking up to Grizzly Lake will always stand out among those great memories.) Thank you for understanding Chip's special needs and all of the attention that he required from me. Thank you for being such an awesome member of the Heaven's Pets Welcoming Committee and therapy dog. Thank you for being such a wonderful member of the Melius family. We all miss you terribly - your dad, Krissi, Logan, Grant, Victoria, Wilson, Zeus, Yanni, Monet, Noni, Dan, Henry, Bobby, everyone who knew you from Heaven's Pets . . . .
Take care of yourself Mika. I look forward to singing Meeka Cheeka Weeka Peeka Teeka, Baby Meeka to you in person someday. And remember how much we all love you and how grateful we are that you graced our lives.
In your memory, I would like to borrow the words of a great, unknown author.
To Our Beloved Little Maltese
Mika Melius
1996 - 2008
The first time I laid eyes on you
I knew right from the start That you were meant for me alone
You put your paw print on my heart.
You taught me unconditional love
You made me laugh and smile
A little clown of angel white
With all your grace and style.
Uncanny how you seem to know All my feelings deep inside
Whether happy, sad or in-between
There's nothing from you I can hide.
Intelligence in those deep dark eyes
How could one be so smart
You knew just how to capture me
You put your paw print on my heart.
A kiss, a whine, a growl, a bark
A language all your own
I understand your every word
With knowledge I've never known.
I know that I am hooked for life
I will let nothing keep us apart
My friend, my pal, my soul mate
You put your paw print on my heart.
