Dr. Mark E. Nowak, 59, of Gargatha died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk. Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., he was the son of the late Walter and Pauline Nowak. Dr. Nowak earned his bachelor's degree from the State University College of Forestry at Syracuse University, his master's degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and his doctorate from Wilmington University in Delaware. He worked for Accomack County Schools, starting in the 1980's as a horticulture instructor at Badger South at Nandua High School. He then served as assistant principal at Arcadia High School and then principal of that school. Most recently, he served as high school coordinator. Dr. Nowak is survived by his wife of 37 years, Cheryl Ann Sdao Nowak; sons, Matthew Nowak of Raleigh, N.C., and Joshua Nowak (and wife, Joy) of Chesterfield, Va.; granddaughter, Nicole Renee Nowak of Chesterfield; and sisters, Elaine Bell (and husband, Andrew) of Youngstown, N.Y., and Karen Nowak of Youngstown. Honoring Dr. Nowak's wishes, no public services will be held. Memorial donations in his name may be made to the charity of one's choice. Memory tributes may be sent to the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements were made by Williams-Parksley Funeral Home.
