ALEXANDER, William 86, of Clearwater, fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, March, 17, 2010. May his memory be eternal. Born in Syracuse, NY, on Oct. 30, 1923, he moved here in 1961. Well known locally as a fair and ethical man, he operated a concessions-and-recreation facility from the early 60s through the mid-90s. The Pier Pavilion on Clearwater Beach was both a popular attraction for families and a workplace for young adults of college and pre-college age. He was active in his church community, being among those who were instrumental in establishing the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Clearwater. During Word War II, he proudly served in the U.S Army Air Corps with duty both stateside and in the Philippines. His military time having spawned an interest in flying, he became a general aviation pilot while living in Florida. He was a Rotarian, a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge and the Shrine.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen; his parents, Harry Alexander and Lucy Gordon Alexander of Syracuse and, later, Clearwater. Also preceding him in death was his brother Thomas of Clearwater. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Harry and Sharon Alexander of Knoxville, Tennessee, as well as James and Rita Alexander of Clearwater.
Survivors also include granddaughter Melissa Alexander Lynch, her husband Patrick and their son Orion of Powder Springs, GA; granddaughter Pamela Alexander of Dunwoody, GA; granddaughter Victoria Alexander Holland and her husband Daniel of Knoxville; grandson James William Heaton Alexander of Clearwater; first cousin Molly Gordon Aridas of Clearwater; and niece Vivian Alexander of Syracuse
Funeral arrangements include visitation at Sylvan Abbey Chapel on Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, 6-8pm with an interceding Trisagion Service at 7pm on Sunday, March 21, 2010. The funeral will be on Monday, March 22, 2010, at 10am at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 409 South Old Coachman Road, Clearwater.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Holy Trinity Philoptochos Society.
