When we were younger I was always amazed at Rad’s ability to go to sleep anywhere - except in his bed.
Being slightly older than him, I was allowed to be up half an hour longer and after I had been put to bed mum would then go looking for Rad to put him back into bed. It was not unusual to find him curled up behind the television, under the stairs, behind the sofa, in the dog’s bed (with Toby asleep on the floor beside him).
But I think the one that takes the biscuit was during one of our caravanning holidays to the New Forest.
For those of you that don’t know, the New Forest is a large area of communal grazing where it is common to find cows, sheep, donkeys and other farm animals wondering around with the native Ponies. New Forest Ponies are not tame, they are wild animals that have been known to kick out on occasion.
One morning I woke before my parents and decided to go wait outside under the awning for them to wake. However I didn’t get much past opening the door. Lying on the floor was Radford, curled up with a young foal, and both of them curled into the mother’s wide belly. (It was decided that either the awning wasn’t zipped up properly the previous night, or that Rad opened it during the night) After shaking mum awake and showing her she insisted that I couldn’t wake Rad but instead we had to wait for either him or the ponies to wake up on their own.
When Rad came into the caravan sometime later he was quite surprised to learn that he’d slept with mother and child.
