Didn't know you Mr. Heavy, but from the little I have seen of your interviews and performances, you were a stand up guy who raised the "Flag" or lets say you assisted in helping to raise the "Standard" very high for other artists. Your character and integrity that manifested through your life was a light in a very dark Arena called Rap! Thanks for helping the younger ones to know that Rap can be clean and honorable. RIP. Much love to your family and especially your daughter.

Goodbye Dwight "Heavy D". You will be missed immensely :( You are not only remembered for blending R&B and Hip Hop to create your own sound but you broke down the barriers of what society and Hollywood expected artists to look like which is stick figure women and muscle bound men. You showed the rest of the world that "heavy" people are just as talented if not more talented.

You weren't only large in size and stature but you were larger than life and you are surely missed.

I remember back in the early to mid '90s working in a hair salon in MetroFit Athletic Club in Pelham, NY. Heavy D and his crew, dancers, including Big Lez would come there and use the studio facilities to practice their choreography. Met him in passing and he was very humble and kind. I was in awe. He kindly said "hello, how you doin'" and went about his business. Great man. Great energy. He will be missed but we will see him again.

*** Remembering the day I met Heavy D.....my heart is HEAVY. Every time I see his face, I always think of that day. ***

Date: 7/30/88
Location: The Radisson Hotel, Columbia SC after his concert with Salt N Pepa.
My age: 16, His age: 21

My mom allowed me to attend the Salt N Pepa concert with Frances, her sister, and Tonya. A hometown friend got us the hookup on a room at the Radisson Hotel. To our surprise, Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella's rooms were on the same floor as ours. An even better surprise: Heavy D's room was diagonal.only a few feet away! So of course as teenagers we did what most teenagers would do.....lounge in the hallway to get his autograph. After lounging for a few, Heavy D's door opened. There stood Heavy D.the overweight lover in the house! We all took in a deep breath, while blocking him from exiting his room. Heavy D briefly gazed the crowd and stood there mesmerized (so we thought) by a girl with us who happened to be smoking a cigarette. I'll call her X. X was a pretty girl who most guys were attracted to. Of course we figured he was too. Anyway, in a polite, sweet, soft tone, Heavy D asked her name. She told him. He then opened his room door and motioned for her to go in. We all were now SCARED! What was she going to do? What was he planning to do to her? We all just stood there...FROZEN! As she entered the door, he said," Ms. 'X', can you please put out that cigarette? The sink is right there (pointing at it). Oh boy, you should have seen the embarassment on her face! She was TOTALLY embarrassed. Yet, she did so and exited the room. Heavy D closed the door behind her and gazed the crowd again to ensure we were all " in check". We were. He then chatted with us, signed autographs, and went his merry way.

Twenty three years later, I still remember that day. Heavy D was and will always be looked upon by me as a true citizen, a man of respect, a man with dignity. He was not the typical famous singer, rapper, or entertainer. He recognized someone doing wrong and did his part to correct the situation without disrespecting himself or anyone.

RIP Heavy D! You were the Heavyweight LOVER who not only loved YOU. This simple encounter with you exemplified that you truly LOVED PEOPLE!
