Theodore 'Ted' James Karwin, son of Tom and Nancy Karwin passed away March 24, 2009. He was born November 13, 1985 in Portland, Oregon, where he made his home for the most part of his life. Ted was a well liked senior at the University of Portland where he studied finance and marketing and was set to graduate and receive his degree in Business Administration in two months. He had transferred from Chapman University in Orange County about two years ago. His passion for advertising and marketing led him to membership in Alpha Kappa Psi. Although only attending UP for two years, his bright smile and charisma impressed students and professors throughout the UP community. ASUP President Kyle Bunch said Karwin was widely involved in university events and activities. "He added so much to our community here at UP", Bunch said. "He was such a driven person and he really made an inmpact on everyone around him". Diane Martin, associate business professor said Karwin was a well-respected student. "Ted was a joy in the classroom with a ready smile and a generous sense of humor", Martin said. Brian Paquette, a 27 year old interior designer described Karwin as an amazing friend. "He always made you feel as if you were the most important person in the room", Paquette said. Paquette described Ted as predictable, always answering the phone on the second ring, returning phone calls, emails and text messages. Along with being charismatic and driven, he was one to go out and get what he wanted, once he had set his mind on it. Others described Ted as one who was always there to listen, help and offer meaningful advice. While attending UP, he had such ambition and drive that a postition of public relations director was specifically created at UP for Ted to sit on the executive board. Along with his committment to school, Karwin's friends and blog talked about his keen interest in fashion, design and cars. The self described "denim snob" often wrote about his interests, especially the continuing progress of his apartment remodel and the latest performance car trends . Ted was an avid "autocrosser" and his car interests led him to active involvement in the Oregon Region Porsche Club and the Sports Car Club of America. He was often seen riding his white bike around NW Portland with friends. In addition to many friends, he is survived by his parents, two aunts, Deborah Varner and Janet Kasperbauer, one uncle, Donald McEwan and his faithful companion "Fred the Dog". His life has touched many people and the positive impact he had on others will be remembered as "a good friend, now and forever".
A Memorial Service celebrating Ted's life was held at 1:00pm on April 1, 2009 at the Southlake Foursquare Church in West Linn, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Oregon Humane Society or The American Cancer Society or Oregon Research Institute for adolescent depression. When remembering our friend, Ted, I will always think of two things: his wonderful sense of humor and his unwavering support of anothers ambition or talent. Even as early as high school he acknowledged others accomplishments with encouragement and was first to send a genuine complement. Because of this I always looked forward to sharing thoughts and ideas with him as I knew his friendship was a safe harbor to nurture creativity. Its a lesson in friendship and decency that Ill take with me for the rest of my life.

Ted (Teddy) was one of my favorite students. He always contributed to the class discussion and activities. I was impressed by his insights and his genuine interest in the study of literature. He was a student that left a lasting impression and I am deeply saddened. The world is missing a bright light of passion, enthusiasm and zest for life. Meagyn Keys Karmakar

"Our Teddy is no longer with us." I will never forget those words and I will never forget Teddy. Such a fine human being. So warm, kind, thoughtful, positive, funny, and smart. So handsome and impeccable in his dress and manners! Such a good friend to my daughter, for which I am grateful. I ache for Erica, Robin, Teddy's family, and all of Teddy's many friends. There is a hole in our hearts and lives. Nancy and Tom, I am

I cannot imagine your devastation and am so sad and heartbroken for you. My deepest sympathies and prayers are with you. I haven't seen Teddy for a while. The last I heard from him was on March 13 when he thanked me for giving him and Erica my Blazer tickets for that night. They had a wonderful time and I know Erica cherishes that last memory of being with Teddy, as well as many fond memories of going out dancing, riding their bikes, and just hanging out. Such a true friendship is a rare thing and will be sorely missed. We love you Teddy, and we miss you terribly. Rest in peace.

Teddy...what a guy. The only person I know who could make me look and feel unkempt! The only guy I would trust with my car...the only guy I know that when he answered the phone, and you asked him how he was, always, always said "Excellent!" Teddy...what a guy. The only person I know who could make me look and feel unkempt! The only guy I would trust with my car...the only guy I know that when he answered the phone, and you asked him how he was, always, always said "Excellent!" He was and always will be in my mind, a one of a kind. Willing to do anything for you at anytime. I watched Ted grow up with our two boys and am so saddened that we will no longer see those three together again, nor will we see how their lives would have been woven together going forward as they were in the past. So I honor our dear friends, Nancy and Tom, with love, hope, prayers, and the future and that this tragic loss will leave an everlasting and hopeful avenue for others. David Meyer
