Kozaburo Miyakawa, 85, passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 at his residence in Indianapolis. Dr. (Kozo) Miyakawa was born on June 20, 1924. He grew up in Kobe, Japan, with his three brothers. Kozo was a gifted student and leader, scoring top test grades, becoming president of his college class, and earning a black belt in judo. He survived World War II in Japan under adverse conditions. In 1951, Kozo came to the US as a Fulbright Scholar, receiving a MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. While there, he worked on the very first supercomputer called the ENIAC. As a graduate student, he built electronic microscopes, receiving his Ph.D in Physics from Colorado State University in 1959. In the 1960's, Kozo became the head of the Physics Department at Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, where he taught until he retired in 1990. He is noted as an accomplished physicist in "Who's Who in America.” Much of his best work was in the area of the Theory of Relativity. He spent his retirement years in his home in the Maplewood area, conducting research and walking daily in the community. In 2007 he relocated to Indianapolis to be closer to family. Dr. Miyakawa is survived by one son, Tom, who is a statistician at Eli Lilly and Co., Tom’s three children, and one brother, Soichiro, of Tokyo, Japan. Tom’s family recently served as missionaries in Thailand. In the last week of his life Kozo asked Jesus Christ to be his Savior, so the family is looking forward to a great reunion in Heaven. Service is 7pm, Tuesday May 25, 2010 at D.O. McComb and Sons Maplewood Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road. Visitation also Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm at the Funeral Home. Burial is 12pm Wednesday May 26, 2010 in Old Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis IN. I would love to hear from you.

I didn't, but I will never forget that moment.
Ends up I'm doing physics now in my 7th decade, anyway. I thought he might smile. I hope he is smiling!
Best to you, all of you,

We are sorry we were not able to get to the funeral home to talk with you Tom. We vividly remeber your Dad walking in the neighborhood. We lived at 6027 Glenview Drive when our kids were growing up - Gretchen, Hans, Thadeus and Ryan. We lived next to Barr's until we moved to Walden in 1973. Hopefully, this will ring a bell with you.
The wonderful part of the obituary to us was that your Dad accepted Jesus Christ as his savior before he passed away.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry for your loss Tommy, but I am happy that my dear old friend Kozo became a Christian.
I met Kozo when he first came to Fort Wayne and what a sweet gentleman he was. He and my husband were close friends, they worked together at Indiana Tech and Kozo often visited us at our home, and when we had our "egg nog" parties we knew that he would always be there.

It was a privilage to have taken classes under Dr. Miyakawa. He was briliant and kind. Thank you Tom, for sharing the opportunity to celebrate your father's 80th birthday. Our prayers are with you and your family. Dr. Miyakawa has touched many of us who has had the chance to meet him and to learn from him.

I saw Dr. Miyakawa so many times over the years walking through Oakhurst neighborhood or on Maplecrest Rd., rain or shine! Sometimes he would be carrying a bag that looked like it contained only one can of soup, so I knew that it was a ritual he seemed to enjoy, not so much that he needed to grocery shop! It was a comfort to me to see him time and time again. In fact, a good friend asked me about

It was a comfort to me to see him time and time again. In fact, a good friend asked me about him after she moved away. I have missed him in recent years and wondered about where he might be. Since I had never met him, I am amazed at the amazing man I read about in his obituary! I am so happy that he accepted Christ - may his family be comforted by looking forward to their reunion in heaven! God Bless!

Tom,
I am sorry to hear of the passing of your father. I can still remember coming to your house as a kid. Your father was such a kind man. We have moved away some time ago but I would cruise through the old neighborhood and would sometimes run into him. I was plesently surprised that your dad still remembered me after all those years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dr. Miyakawa was my physics professor at Tech in the mid-1980s. To this day I retell stories of his amazing intellect. My heart rejoices that Dr. Miyakawa accepted Jesus in the last days of his life. For those left behind find comfort in Paul's words in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18:
13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that

13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.[b]
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
