Elmer. E. Reis, 70, of Del Mar, CA, rejoined the Lord on January 23, 2010. He was born in Scottsbluff, NE on July 30, 1939, the first-born son of the late Elmer and Esther Reis. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Ernestine Reis and his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Leanne Reis, and his grandchildren Zane and Zada Reis of Camarillo, CA.; adopted step daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and John Rathjen of Waipahu, HI; and Elmer also left many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

Elmer Reis graduated from high school in Rantoul, Illinois in 1957. He received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Mechanics from University of Illinois in 1962 and received his Masters of Science in Engineering Mechanics in 1963.

He was a resident of San Diego for the last 35 years and had a rich career in nuclear fusion research and development with General Atomics for 31 years. He was an avid golfer, world traveler, Assistant Scout Master, surfer, and outdoorsman. Above all, Elmer was a man who loved the Lord and served Him through his church.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 30th 1 PM at St. James Catholic Church, 625 S. Nardo Ave. in Solana Beach and the internment will follow at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road in San Diego.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Dear Ernie & family:
I have only good, friendly memories of Elmer. We were classmates at Rantoul High School. I have only seen Elmer a couple times since we graduated from high school in 1957 but I liked him and I know that he'll be missed. Elmer will always stand tall in my memories for more reasons. I'll bet I recall something many or all of you may not recall. When we left for college in the fall of 1957, Elmer was about 2 inches shorter than me. When next I saw him the next summer, not even a full year, he was 2 or more inches taller than me! Heck! I thought one stopped growing when one left high school. My sincerest sympathies go out to you all for Elmer's passing. May God rest his soul. Gene Shaw

I can just remember Elmer on our scouting trip to Canada in 1954. Sorry to hear hes gone. Best wishes to the family.

It saddens me greatly to learn of Elmer's passing. I saw him only a few times over the years since we were classmates and friends at Rantoul High School and the University of Illinois. Since we both ended up living most of our adult lives in California I regret that we didn't see each other more often and have a closer relationship, especially since we lived in the same state. He was delightful -- intelligent, charming friendly and good natured. I always felt at ease in his presence and felt that he was a decent and caring individual. Over the years when I reflected upon my Rantoul days I always thought of Elmer and looked forward to seeing him again. The last time we saw each other was at our 50th high school reunion in Rantoul. I really enjoyed seeing him again. I am very sorry it was the last time. I feel he was a old soul and we may meet again in another life time. My warmest regards to his family and friends. Until we meet again, Elmer. Richard Harris (Class of 57)

Dear Ernie,
I had the pleasure of meeting you and Elmer at dinner at Chad and Caroline's, when we were in California for their wedding. Elmer and I had a nice conversation and during that conversation he shared his love of family and golf! I came away from that meeting knowing he was a good and kind man who loved his family and had a great deal of joy in his life. This has been portrayed many times since through memories and photos Chad and Caroline have related of the family gatherings they have shared with you, Elmer, Richard, Leanne, Zane and Zada. These memories shared are always joyful, loving times with a family that he loved and that loved him very much. I am thankful for the opportunity to have met Elmer and thankful for the love he brought to others. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

I was shocked and saddened in learning of Elmer's death. I met Elmer over 45 years ago and my first remembrance is feehis engaging, broad smile that prefaced his greeting. That warm and sincere smile was indicative of his personality. He was a man that knew the true definition of "friend" as he was the epitome of one. I am out-of-town now or I would attend the services to celebrate his life. My heartfelt condolences to Ernie, Richard and family. I pray that God will grant you the Peace that passes all understanding.

We were saddened to hear of Elmer's passing. To the Reis Cousins he was always "Pudge" and the one thing I will always remember about him was how he could tell a family story, put a little humor in it and make everyone laugh! Dear Ernie, Richie and family,

Please accept our deepest sympathy with the loss of Elmer. We were fortunate to have him as a friend and neighbor for over 30 years. He was always there, willing to take out our trash cans or toss the papers over the gate and to help us keep up to date with neighborhood activities.

The marriage of our two wonderful neighbors, Ernie and Elmer has always been a wonderful love story to remember and witness it's success over the years. The love and devotion you felt for each other was always very evident.

You both always provided the coveted job for the neighborhood kids, handed down when one went off to college: taking care of your darling Westies when you traveled. We appreciated the great reference Elmer gave our son Jeff for his first engineering job out of university.

May many happy memories sustain you during this difficult time.

Ernie, Richard & Family, The word of Elmer's passing came as a major, painful shock. Pudge was more of a "Big Brother" to me than a Cousin. Our early childhood years were spent in Scottsbluff, NE and I have such fond memories of the time I spent with him. He was truely one of the nicest, most caring individuals we have ever known. His quick wit and keen sense of humor made him so much fun to be around. Sally & I treasure the time we spent with the two of you over the years and are so grateful that we were able to visit and spend those few days with you last April. Those special memories will remain with us forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Ernie and Richard- I am so saddened by the passing of Elmer. He was such a great guy. Taking us when we were kids to Padre and Charger games, Indian Guides, etc... He had that classic laugh that I can still hear right now. As the saying goes anyone can be a father but it takes a real man to be a dad and that he was.

I am overcome with sadness with the news of Pudge's passing. He was a great person--loving, giving, grateful, Blessed. Ernie, Richard--you are in our prayers as you deal with the loss of your partner, father, friend. May God's Peace be a comfort to you as you grieve.

I will always remember more than anything Pudge, Ernie and Richard Laurie picking me up shortly after I rode my motorcycle from Champaign to start law school in San Diego. Young and dumb, you embraced me with open arms like old friends. I remember the golf, the cocktails, the cigars, the trip to Scottsbluff, the fellowship and friendship. I remember how much he loved God, loved his family and loved children.

I am ever grateful for all of the help, love and friendship that you shared with us over the years and we share in your grief. I love Pudge and will miss him. Hug a kid and honor Elmer Reis!

Dearest Ernie & family,
I feel so lucky to be able to say I have known Elmer, such a sweet kind man since I was a young teenager. I now have grandchildren of my own. I was always impressed by how he would squat down to be able to look into a child's eyes while talking to them so he could be on their level. His love for family always so evident. Ernie his love for you..... Something we all hope for in our life time. That one true love! The way in which he spoke your name or how he would look at you. In the darkness look up and look for the brightest star and that just may be the twinkle in Elmer's eye sending you his love & giving you that loving look. Love Rene & Paul

Growing up, Elmer was like a second father, an uncle and a friend. I still remember all the ski trips with Rich, Elmer, my brother, and dad. No mind the fog, just hang your head out the window to find the double yellow line.

No matter the day or time, Elmer and Ernie always had a home cooked meal (or pizza) and a cold (beverage) during my college years at UCSD.

Sure we messed up, but Elmer believed in us, and made us who we are today.

God bless Elmer, Ernie, Richard and family.

Life Stories

Elmer will always be Pudge to his family. When I was a little boy Pudge
would take me for rides in his convertible, I was amazed how he could
steer the car with his knee. Then there was the time Elmer Sr. gave Pudge the Corvette as a graduation present from the U of Illinois. Pudge
wanted to be the first to give me a ride in that car but neither Elmer
Sr. nor myself could resist from taking it for a spin. I had to promise
that I wouldn't tell Pudge, well needless to say that when he came by
to give me that first ride I spilled the beans. About halfway through the
ride Pudge ask me what I thought of the car and the look on my
face said it all, or else his dad had already told him I had gone for one. He looked at me and said, you've already been for a ride. I think
it made him a little mad but everyone in the family got a kick out
of knowing I couldn't keep a secret. That is just one of the memories
I will treasure about this man and growing up in one of the best families and with the finest men and women that God has ever put on this earth. Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to share a story story about one of the most gentle and caring people I have been graced with knowing. Don Reis

Elmer and I worked as fellow engineers here at GA. He appreciated my previous mechanical engineering and we resonated on bits of mechanical design and the boy scouts. He was a fellow scouter as well as I. He was always a pleasure to greet and talk with.

Here at work (GA) I have only worked with Elmer for only a short time. But within that
time I found him to be a very kind and intelligent man. I had a lot of respect for him and was sadden to hear that he has passed.
