Guest in 'Seinfeld' finale dies

The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — John Pinette, the chubby stand-up comedian who portrayed a hapless carjacking victim in the final episode of "Seinfeld," has died. He was 50.

Pinette died of natural causes Saturday at a hotel in Pittsburgh, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office said Sunday evening. Pinette's agent confirmed his death.

The portly Pinette was a self-deprecating presence on stage, frequently discussing his weight on stand-up specials "Show Me the Buffett," ''I'm Starvin'!" and "Still Hungry."

Pinette had been working on another stand-up project when he died, his agent, Nick Nuciforo, said.

"He should be celebrated for the amazing comedian he was," Nuciforo said.

The Boston native appeared in movies including "The Punisher" and had a trio of stand-up shows released on DVD but was perhaps best known as the portly carjacking victim whose plight lands the "Seinfeld" stars before a judge for failing to help under a "good Samaritan" law. Pinette also appeared in the television series "Parker Lewis Can't Lose."

Pinette also appeared on state in a national tour of "Hairspray" as Edna Turnblad, the mother of the play's heroine.

The medical examiner's office said no autopsy was performed and Pinette's own physician signed off on the cause of death.

Pinette had been preparing for a stand-up tour of the U.S. and Canada, Nuciforo said.

We saw you perform twice in California at the Hermosa Beach Comedy Club - so good we had to come back for "seconds". Could really relate to you - you were only 1 month younger than me. I'm a big guy too. Thought you were hysterically funny - will miss you greatly. So long, John.

John, just want to say, THANK YOU for the laughs. Your light shined for only a short time, and we all loved you. We will miss your smile as your whole face lit up when you showed us your pearly whites. Gone...but not forgotten. Sending love from one of your biggest fans.

John, you made us laugh 'til we cried, now we cry for your loss until we recall the joy you brought to us. My wife often recalled your, "You go now, that's all you can eat," and "Bring a sandwich." I shared your humor with my son today. We laughed and mourned your loss and Heaven's gain. Saint Peter may ask you for some laughter before he open's Heaven's Gate, but I'm sure He will agree, like all of your fans that you were worth the admission. You almost made it back to NJ, but NJ will never forget you. Edmund, Chesterfield NJ

I never laughed so hard as when I saw John in person. His routines were clean, no vulgarity and he relied on his material for his humor. He was the funiest comedian in a long, long time. When I go to a buffet I think of him and just want to say nay nay on certain occasions. My condolences to his family. You will be sorely missed by all. RIP dear friend.

John was a rarity these days - a comedian who could be funny without having to resort to crude humor. He saw the humor in everyday situations and had a delivery which pulled you in. Never got to see him in person, but his specials will ensure that people can experience his wonderful body of work for years to come. RIP John, and thank you for the laughs.

I am so sorry for this great loss. He was such a funny man! My 24 year old son's friend introduced us to him on the internet five years ago. I was 55, and I laughed until I cried. He had a gift for comedy and relating to the common person. We will watch his appearances on Netflix over and over, whenever we know we need to laugh. He always delivered. He is appearing in God's heavenly comedy club this week. God bless his family.
