Condolence & Memory Journal

Joe Young was one of my bosses in the IT department at TXDOT. I spent many days that his friend Jimmy Barrows and Joel's house checking his cows. I left TXDOT around 16 years ago but have always had fun memories of my days with Joel. Unfortunately, I was sitting at my house one day thinking back about people in my life and wondered what happened to Joe Young. I looked him up and unfortunately found that he passed two years earlier.

Joel had a smile and an encouraging word for those of us doing bowling tournaments, whether we were doing great or not, and it was always appreciated. He will be missed!

I worked with joel in the early 1970's at the highway dept. we ran around together for about 4 years before I got another job at dps. what a great person and friend. we played pool, drank beer, played hand ball, drank beer, went do Monday night football at the tavern and had a couple of pitchers or two. we grew apart after my job change. but, I still remember our great friendship and he will be missed.

Joel and I shared many experiences working at TxDOT such as learning to count cracks in the roadway for the Pavement Evaluation System he developed. We also taste tested hot sauces in Phoenix while sweat poured off the top of Joel's head. He said that was his reaction to extreme heat! We also shared lunches at the Tavern with Jimmy Barrows where Joel usually ordered a healthy vegetable plate. We shared many laughs and TxDOT stories as well as Joel's stories about things like leaky tractor radiators. Joel was a good friend and a good person.

Joel, was my league partner for 2 leagues for about the last 4 years. We bowled together during the regular season and the summer. It was a great priviledge to be able to bowl and learn from this man. He was an inspiration to me every week when we bowled together. I will miss the turkeys, hambones and 5 dollar foot longs, I will especially miss the "Aggie Strike".
Dos XX will live on, in his rememberance. Good bye Joel - I hope the lanes are better where you are at..., you will be missed by many....
