Tribute & Message From The Family
Faithful servant of God
Message From The Family
Thank you for your care and love for Duane and his family
Duane Engelhardt, a man with a loving heart for his wife of 57 years, Norma, 3 sons Mark (Laura), Kevin (Tracey) and Jeff (Diane), 8 grandchildren; Ashley, Grace, Drew, Laura, Cole, Scott, Kyle and Kelsey and 1 great grandchild; Nolan, died on March 30, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. Duane, born 1936, was raised in St. Olaf Iowa and resided in Springfield New Jersey for the past 49 years. He is also survived by his brother James (Patricia) of Milwaukee Wisconsin and sister Phyllis (Harlan Thurn) of St. Olaf Iowa.
Duane graduated from Luther College in 1958 and earned his graduate degree in Nuclear Physics and Calculus from Vanderbilt University in 1959. He was a tireless worker in the Computer and Life Insurance industries, bringing the first computer system to the New York Stock exchange in 1986. Beside his passion for sales, Duane was also a Bridge Life Master and taught and played bridge until his final days. Above all, his greatest love was for his grandchildren.
Duane was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Summit New Jersey for 49 years; holding multiple leadership positions throughout the church community. Duane was committed to stewardship and was President of the Lutheran Laity Movement from 1986 to 1988.
His faith in God gave him the strength to battle multiple illnesses for the past 15 years and is truly an example for us all.
Condolence & Memory Journal
Duane was one of my bridge teachers in Summit, NJ. He could be seen in half a dozen bridge clubs as a player, director, or both. I had the honor of having Duane as my partner on a number of Friday nights, and he always showed great card sense. We will all miss him in the bridge world.

So sorry to hear this news. I have so many great memories coming over Kevin's house to play. Can still picture his face, raising his eyebrows at us for some of the things we said or did. Especially strong memory is the church trip car ride to the ski slope with the continually rolling down and up window!! He really will be missed but the memories will live on.
Deepest Sympathy,
Robert

I looked forward to seeing Duane at our weekly bridge games at CBCC. I was in awe at his mastery of such a complex game. It was a pleasure knowing him. My prayers go to Norma and his whole family. Joan Resler

Duane was passionate about his bridge and family-especially family. He taught me much about bridge for which I am thankful. His "never give up" spirit while fighting illness was an example for us all.
My sympathies to all in his family.

Duane's positive outlook and fighting spirit always inspired me. While he was a formidable opponent (but always kind and gracious) at the bridge table, it was his outlook on life that was always most impressive. His pride in his family was evident. I am sorry for your loss. Our loss as well.
