Tribute & Message From The Family

Gus W. Lampe died March 30, 2015 at the age of 93. He was born Gustav Otto Marquart in San Antonio, Texas on March 9, 1922 to Gus and Elizabeth Marquart.

Placed in the San Antonio Mission children's home when he was four, Gus was rescued by his uncle and adopted by Werner and Nannie Lampe where they made a home with Gus on their dairy farm in LaGrange, Texas.

After finishing high school, Gus joined the Navy and served in the Asiatic Pacific area during WW II with location primarily off the west coast of California and the Pacific Northwest. After proudly serving his country, Gus enrolled in Texas A&M College where he went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Administration. During his time at A&M, Gus met Ethel Boswell, the love of his life, and they were married in 1949 prior to his graduation in 1951. Gus was a member of the Bryan-College Station Kiwanis club, the American Legion and the Texas A&M University Former Students Association. Gus supported his family with a varied career serving as a District Representative with GMAC, an insurance and real estate broker, Counselor with the Texas Rehabilitation commission, a Senatorial Aide to the late Senator William T. (Bill) Moore and taught real estate at Blinn College at their Bryan, Texas campus. Gus never met a stranger and in his active years could be found sketching caricatures of people that impacted his life.

Gus and Ethel moved to San Antonio in 1996 and found a new church family at University United Methodist Church where Gus continued to lead the singing for their Sunday school class and was an active participant in the Silver Bucket Singers providing comfort and joy to the congregation and special ministries.

I am so sorry for your loss. Gus will be remembered for a long time, especially for his sketches he was always making. He once made some sketches for me to explain various everyday things to teach those with special needs. I will treasure those for a lifetime. I know without a doubt he is now leading a heavenly men's choir. Listen carefully and you will hear him singing.

I am sad to hear that gus passed away, I last talked with him in January, when my dad had died! He wanted to attend his funeral but wasn't able to travel to Bryan. My dad and gus were good friends, fellow Kiwanians, that are having a swell time in heaven! My prayers are with the entire family, I will try to attend the Memorial service! God Bless. Brian M
