Condolence & Memory Journal

Too many good people left us this year, and I am sorry to learn belatedly that Ruth was among them. I first met Ruth nearly sixty years ago, through her daughter Celia and son, David, when we all attended P.S.87. My parents became good friends with her and her husband Phil Michaels, and they spent many joyous parties at our home. Years later after Phil's death, when she married Henry Rosner, my parents were very happy for her and had them by many times as well.

Ruth can seem saintly if judged by her actions. But, her warm humanity made her much more than that. She appreciated people who stand up against cruel bullies and for what is right an ethical. She could have capitalized on her connections and reputation much more than she did, but she always adhered to her moral center. The world is much the poorer for her absence.

May you rest in eternal peace Mrs. Gruber. I am connected to you through your writings about Felisa Ricon de Gautier, the Mayor of San Juan. Thank you also for shedding light on another great humanitarian Elinor Guggenheimer whom you knew personally.

May the Lord keep you in his loving embrace,

What a great loss to all of mankind. So rare that we find such a selfless and inspiring person who considers the needs of others before themselves. I am reminded of these words when I picture Mrs. Gruber..."Take note of the blameless one, And keep the upright one in sight, For the future of that man will be peaceful." Psalms 37:37. She is the epitome of those beautiful words. Her legacy will continue to inspire and stir the hope for a time when the whole earth will be filled with people like her. Psalms 37:29

I am one of the refugees Ruth accompanied to the U.S. in 1944. I was 12 at the time and am now 84, but I never forgot the young and beautiful woman and her smile while she hefted her Leica, pointing it at anyone who caught her attention. My wife and I met her about 20 years ago during one of her visits to the San Francisco Bay area and noted that although she had matured a bit since 1944, she was still as young dynamic personally and spiritually as ever. This quality stayed with her to the day she left us.

We will never forget her.

I am always pleased to read about the self-sacrifices that humanitarians make in behalf of others. I was very impressed by what Ms. Gruber did to help others.

I hope that those in the same position can follow Ms. Gruber's example.

When I consider how long she lived, I am sure she touched many lives through her endeavors.

May the God of tender mercies comfort the family at this time.

I have known Ruth Gruber for over twenty years. We met at a reading in New York City and have been friends ever since. Whenever I was in the city visiting my daughter I visited with Ruth. We went out for lobster dinners in her neighborhood - or just visited- through the years. Ruth believes that a person should never retire. She has always been an inspiration to me and mine. When she spoke at the Richmond Holocaust Museum she started off "Can you hear me?" followed by "Can you see me?" That was because of her diminutive stature. Ruth is such a remarkable person and led an incredible life.

Posted by Barbara Smith - Newport News, VA   November 20, 2016

Ruth did indeed love to talk and write and tell a story and she did it for many many years. She will certainly be missed and mourned by many people. To her grieving family and relatives : " If a man dies can he live again ? You will call and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands." Respectfully submitted with sincere condolences and sympathies.

Mrs. Gruber demonstrated love of neighbor which is not a 'random act of kindness' but that which is thoughtfully and purposefully executed and which is second to the greatest and first command in the Law. Matthew 22:37-39*.
