To the Saunders/White family:

Please accept my sincerest condolences. I remember a conversation I had with Debbie many years ago, and how warm and down to earth she was. I was somewhat unaware of the length of her remarkable list of accomplishments. Your great family and her memory will be in my thoughts.

Where do I start? We first met as students at Moton Elementary in Hampton, VA. Middle School or Junior High as we called it back then would take us in different directions but we would reconnect at Kecoughtan High School and have lots of fun together; basketball games, parties, you name it. She was from a warm and loving family and I always enjoyed my time in their home. After high school Debbie took off for UVA and I joined her after going to ODU for one year. She encouraged me to transfer and helped me get acclimated to my new environment. More great memorable times. We lived together our last year in college and I eventually joined our great sorority before graduating, after much persuasion from Debbie and other members. Debbie was always ambitious, energetic and bright. I knew she would achieve great things. I was never surprised about anything she accomplished. Our career paths were different after college but we still played hard on weekends; Richmond, Norfolk, DC and took trips together until marriages and the circumstances of life intervened. I last saw her the night before she was being installed as Chancellor at NCCU. We were in Raleigh at an AKA convention and she was honored at a public meeting. I hugged her, told her I loved her and how proud I was of her. I'll hold that last encounter in my heart forever. I am thankful for the time we had together.

I am so proud to have known her as a fun-loving kId and as the beautiful, smart and caring woman she became. She was one of KHS's brightest stars and a true Warrior. I miss her already. May God grant her eternal rest, and may He give her family and friends comfort and strength in the days ahead.
