Condolence & Memory Journal

I worked with Wayne when I was the TV spotter for SF 49er broadcast games from about 19781986. Wayne would do all the 49er pre season games for Local TV with me in broadcast booth. What a gentleman, Knowledgeable guy. We would talk NFL trivia about the 1960s Nfl, Lions PKers, his teammates ( Alex Kara's etc,) his college career ( Jerry Kramer) etc etc... loved by all who had the pleasure to work along side him!

Hi Sylvia, I recently found out that Wayne had passed away. You may not remember, but you asked me if I would like to fly the 49er charters with you. I remember when you and Wayne were dating; when you two got married and how we teased you about not wanting to get married again. But you and Wayne were so perfectly matched; how could you not say yes?! You two were a gift to each other. Wayne was truly a gentle man, a good man with a wicked personality. I pray that you are continuing to live this life the way he would expect. I'm sure he closed his eyes feeling loved. Debi Gould (United Airlines-SFOSW)

Condolences To the Walker Family. Wayne Walker was an assistant coach for the Livonia Blue Jays back in the early sixties. His son Steven and I both played together for the Blue Jays. I am so sad to hear of his passing. My prayers go out to his family and Steven.

Best wishes to Wayne's wife Sylvia.

Sylvia, I met you thirty years ago when you called to put some tile on the fireplace of your Scott St home. Was such a nice surprise to meet both you and Wayne. You're both very special people.
Then during the course of that work I completed my first child was born. And you sent me the most cheerful card. Anyway that "child" is now 30 years old and had her first baby girl almost 3 months ago.
Cant tell you how shocked I was to learn of your husband's passing. I hope that you'll recover from these sad days soon.

My deepest sympathy.

Wayne was a great competitor, and a fine example of the best that Boise High produced in those days. It was a privilege to know him then, and later as his sports career blossomed.

While Wayne tried his best to help me with my color commentating career, even he couldn't help. He did lend his voice to us on KTIK and was a true professional and I have mad respect for him. Rip my friend.

I met Wayne Walker once in Dallas. The Lions were playing the Cowboys in the Cotton Bowl stadium and Dad and Bobbly Lane made arrangements for our families to meet in Dallas for the game and to get Alan Lane and I on the sidelines. Wayne Walker #55 was so nice to us boys in the locker room and to get us set up on the sidelines. He played a great game and after the game he gave me his Detroit Lion wind breaker #55.
Our deepest sympathy - from the Yale Lary family to the Wayne Walker family. I have been sickened by the recent loss of my Father so I can relate when I tell you all how sorry I am that Wayne is not hear to touch and talk to; and how sorry I am you are grieving. As fate may have it, I spoke to Joe Schmidt today. Joe thinks all the old Lions are having a good time together again in Heaven. I hope so. And I pray we will all be with our Fathers again.

I worked with Wayne for twenty years when he was the preeminent sportscaster in the San Francisco Bay Area. Not a better man to be found. His wit, charm, dedication to his craft and to his contemporaries was unsurpassed. More importantly he was a friend whose relationship I will always remember. I will miss Wayne Walker

Wayne's family: my condolences. I might share a couple of treasured memories. We attended 1st grade @ St. Joseph; I remember during recess Wayne used to chase me (for what reason, I can't remember)? And, #2, we played, not only football, but basketball together @ Boise High. Lots of nice high school athletic memories. Ken Peterson

My family grew up watching Mr. Walker on TV in SF during dinner time. All three of my brothers and I loved sports and wanted to be on his Sports Challenge. He was as icon in the Bay Area and in our family

My sincere condolences to his family. God Bless Wayne Walker

One of the really GREAT guys in the TV sports world. As his "competitor" for 5 years at a Sacramento station, I am forever grateful to Wayne for the warm friendship he extended this fellow Idahoan, and the unquestioned support he offered me during the times we worked in locker rooms and TV edit bays in SF and across the NFL. A remarkable person for his lack of ego and ability to put those around him at ease. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers to the family. RIP

Our prayers are with Wayne's family. Wayne and I were Boise High grads of different eras, but for many years in the SF Bay area, we would run into each other in both Professional baseball and university athletics, as he covered local sports for Channel 5-San Francisco and I was as an athletic trainer on the various sidelines. He always made it a point to come up to me and say hello, even though, he was very involved covering the sports event. We called each other "Boise". All the professional and college athletes loved and respected Wayne as a sportscaster, athlete and friend. It was a real honor to know Wayne and count him as a friend. God Bless you, Wayne

Loved the guy. Simple fact. I watched him practice, play and then had the chance to work together and throw back a few. Magical times, all with a smile.

My condolences to the Walker family, Wayne had a very memorable NFL career, as well as being the number #1 sportscaster in the Bay Area which hasn't changed since he left.

I always enjoyed Mr.Walker's 49er pregame shows where he would interview a player, then have a velcro covered mini ball which he would throw at a board with the 49ers opponents name on it. The velcro ball would always land on the 49ers each week as winning the game and 90% of the time they did as this was the Joe Montana era.

Godspeed to Heaven Mr. Walker, you were loved and will be missed.

To the family, sincere condolences on the passing of Wayne Walker a great football player (in John Brodie's autobiography a very smart linebacker).
The San Francisco Bay Area was blessed with many excellent sport broadcasters, Wayne was certainly one of the best of them. He was knowledgeable and proficient. You could see he had a rapport with players, coaches and whoever he worked with. He appeared to be friendly, had an easy smile and was just likable. Of course I never met him but I feel as if I lost a personal friend,
I think Wayne lived life as he wanted and so - rest in peace.

Wayne was an NFL legend as a player, and he became the best television sports reporter/director and radio football analyst in Bay Area media history. Even in recent years, I've heard and read his name often when stories of his nonpareil work and exemplary character have been remembered. A highly respected and beloved man, who will be greatly missed.

So very sad to hear of the passing of Mr Walker - he was my favorite sportscaster, and I remember listening avidly to his reporting. Deepest Sympathy and Condolences to his family.

Wayne and I worked for a decade together on 49ers radio broadcasts from the late 80s thru the late 90s. I never had a color commentator who could match him in anticipating what was about to happen and then describe why it happened. A great sense of humor, warm and supportive, a very special man. My deepest sympathy to Sylvia and all family members.
