Condolence & Memory Journal

I was always honored, and humbled to be in Mr. Shelton's presence. He knew more about aviation, than anyone could ever imagine. He is flight instructing at the highest level now. Thank you for being part of my life, Mr. Shelton.

Sorry for your loss. I'm one of the 1000 plus who took my private check ride from Clyde.

What a loss to the pilot community. I am very glad that I has a chance to know and meet him.

I flew from Atlanta for my private check ride in '97. I probably learned more on that check ride than I did during my training. Was such a great experience. I remember making him laugh on the ride. Hit my first check point right on schedule. He told me my destination was closed. I eyeballed my alternate and made sure that I could use any method at my disposal to navigate to that airport. He said "yes". I still had Huntsville approach on the other half of my radio. Flipped freqs and got a radar vector. Don't think he saw that one coming and got a chuckle out of it. Best part was Mr. Shelton having fun with me after the test. We (I) flew under the hood all the way back and shot a hooded approach with him giving me instructions all the way to the flare. He was a one of a kind to be sure and will be greatly missed.

Mr. Shelton and I met last November for my IFR check ride. I am so thankful for the opportunity to fly with him and his graciousness in dealing with a nervous pilot. I will never forget him bringing me in to MDQ under the hood, all the way to touchdown! I wish I could've known him more. God Bless You Mr. Shelton, till we meet again...

What a great man he was. I learned not just flight lessons, but life lessons from him. Over come your fears. Don't panic. Know your check list. He made sure I'd always remember the day I solo'd even though I didn't think I was ready. It was the day of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident and I only had 7 hours of instruction. But, I did it! Thank you, Clyde, for almost that you have.

From 2006-2009 I spoke with Clyde twice a week and sent ~600 checkrides from our two locations to help towards the 10000. The instructor pool turned over quite a bit, but Clyde was a mainstay. Without him, my job would have been near impossible. I will fondly remember our phone conversations as we worked together to get so many pilots in the air for life. Though it's been years since we've spoken, a big part of my old team is now gone. I'll miss him. In the mean time, I'll be praying for your family and all Clyde's friends.

Clyde taught me to fly 34 years ago. He was a wonderful flight instructor and I remember my time spent in the cockpit with him very fondly. I still use and enjoy the skills he taught me to this day.

One of the best men I ever had the chance to know! He administered five check-rides to me and everyone was a pleasure. You will be missed ole friend. Until we meet again, enjoy the flying up there.

As a CFI at North Huntsville from '87-89, I sent probably a dozen aviators to Clyde for their respective pilot certificate. Mr Shelton was a consummate aviator, citizen, and friend. He will be missed.

Clyde was my flight instructor and such a wonderful man. I'll never forget how calm he was in any situation and how lovingly he spoke of his wife. He was one of the good guys and I'll treasure my memories of him.
