Guitarist for the influential instrumental rock band The Ventures…

Nokie Edwards, lead guitarist for the influential instrumental rock band The Ventures, has died at the age of 82, according to multiple news sources. For full coverage and obituary from, click here.

Condolence & Memory Journal

The Ventures were the main reason I took up guitar. The first song I learned was Walk Don't Run.The music they made was so clean and natural and unique. When Nokie switched to lead guitar, they became so varied in style. Nokie was a gifted musician and added so much class to The Ventures music.I set my style of playing to imitate The Ventures as I am sure so many other musicians did.I did get to meet Nokie ,Bob Bogle and Mel Taylor in Oakland, MD. in 1993. WHAT A NIGHT. I was in my glory listening to those guys.

Before the big time, at my aunt Tootsie and uncle Buck Jacksons house on the south hill of Puyallup in the late 1950s, my sister and I were in the living room when a group of musicians came in and played. It was incredible, in that small room we heard what was to be the most influential instrumental group of our time.

Nokie was one of my first guitar Heros. I finally met him at the Chet Atkins Association festival and enjoyed his Music and solo CDs and also got Nokie to sign some CDs and I talked to him several times. I still listen to his Ventures music that as I did constantly as a kid. I am saddened to hear of his passing and I have to believe he is playing again in the all star band in Heaven. R.I.P. Nokie.

Nokie and I spoke on the phone on numerous occasions over the past few years and became friends. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity of meeting him, but he did help me in certain times of crisis. And yes, he was humble and helpful and never balked at doing me favors. Not only was I a huge fan of his talent and legacy, but also became a friend. I will miss our chats and his music. His passing has left a huge void in my heart. To his wife Judy and other family members, my sincere condolences and prayers that you will get through this sad time in your lives.

I loved this guy. Saw him on tv with my dad in the early '60's and followed him throughout his career. I'm still working on his wonderful style and expression with the guitar. It's hopeless that I will ever sound like him. My heart felt best wishes go to his family. His legacy is huge in the guitar world. Thank you Nokie....

Nokie, you ARE my favorite guitar player. I was hoping I could have met you in person, and was planning a trip out west to do so (I almost saw you in Manila). I learned to play guitar from you and Bob and Don from the Play Guitar with the Ventures records (Pipeline was my first song). My brother Ernie and my Father also loved your music. I also let my best friends know about your great talent. We will never forget you! God Bless You and your Family and Friends.

I remember at the age of 7 years old rocking out to Wipe Out when my older teenage brother would play it on the record player. My friend and I would dance on the front porch of our house in our go-go boots. I remember it being a favorite song for the fast skate when we went rollerskating too.
My condolences to the Edwards family and all of Nokie's friends. May God bless you with His peace to comfort your hearts and minds and to give you the strength you need now during this most difficult time and in the days ahead. Psalms 29: 11 ❤❤❤

My son called me the other day, he's 48, I'm 75. He wanted to talk about "Walk don't run" I was surprised he remembered the song when he saw the obituary of Nokie Edwards. He said to me he remembered me introducing the song to him when he was little. It left an impression on him so he had to call and tell me that you passed away.
Today we both share the sorrows of your passing.
Walk don't run was one of my favorite songs of ever. I can still call up the chord memory and sound of your guitar playing walk don't run.
RIP with a tear from Father and Son

You seldom hear the name Nokie Edwards listed among great guitar players. But I would put him in the top 10! His stage presence was not one of flash, but of precision. Nokie influenced me unknowingly and still watch him play Hawai'i 5-0 with my jaw wide open! My prayers and heartfelt condolences to his family. One fantastic musician!

This man brought us melodies that soothes us. He traveled the world to do it. His songs became embedded into my internal jukebox. I am his brother forevermore. He is legendary. Any guitarist who knows anything about guitar nods his direction. Before there was The Beatles there was The Ventures. After The Beatles there was The Ventures. Nokie entered into Heaven and Semie Moseley handed him the most awesome guitar and praise music went up a notch. Heaven is sounding glorious! Don't it make you wanna go home?

I think just about every guy between the ages of 8 and 25 in the early 60's had a copy of "Walk Don't Run" . What great memories of that song and so many others that the Ventures produced. Thank you Nokie for helping to ignite the fire of Rock and Roll!

Nokie, I vividly remember dining out after a
show at BUSCH GARDENS in Florida in 2012. It
was a blast hangin' out with you at THE OLIVE
GARDEN along with Judy, Byron Tietjen, Bob &
Charlotte Dowd & Jeff & Julie Green. We all
picked your brain & you were patient & gracious
with it all. Your legacy will be- "easily 'the
most copied' lead guitarist in rock 'n roll
history!" Don't worry- up there in heaven, your buddies Chet & Les will let you shine on
lead as well!

To all of Nokie's family, friends and fans, I am saddened by the news of his passing. He was great and will live on in my memories of growing up in the South Bay in Redondo Beach, California. His surf music with the Ventures is legendary. I'm so glad I got to see him as an adult when they came back to the Redondo pier a few years back to play the old tunes again. I took my daughter with me to see him and hear the music I loved in my younger days as a care free beach bunny. He autographed the CD for me which they were selling at the event. Now, I will be young forever every time I listen to it. Thank you for your musical talents and blessing us all with your music. Rock out in heaven and know how much you are loved all over the world. Thank you for sharing your life with us...Christine Cantu
