Condolence & Memory Journal

Ms. Grant was one of my very first teachers at the old Fairlee School prior to moving to the new school on Blake Street. We had a classmate who lived in the first house passed the ledges next to the Chamberlain residents on Route 5 and he was constantly disrupting the class. After one episode Ms. Grant brought a discarded dishwasher box in and after this student had taken his seat she carefully lifted the box over him and instructed him to raise his hand if he needed to go to the bathroom, etc. All of us other students waited and waited for his reaction but nothing happened and we all had a wonderful day. The next day when this gentleman arrived he had a pocket knife and carved out little windows on all four sides. Not to be outdone Ms. Grant covered the windows with duct tape. After about three days he raised his hand and told Ms. Grant he would behave if she removed the box. She did and he became a wonderful student. Unfortunately midway through the year his dad changed jobs(he was working at the Mallory farm) and he left Fairlee. Not only was Ms. Grant a great teacher but the example above showed how great she was at adapting new methods to solve old problems. As you can see by the fact that I remember this very distinctly and I'm now 73 years of age Ms. Grant had a very distinct input in my education. I can only hope that she is in a better place now but I do know that I am in a better place because of her.
