I had the opportunity to meet Dale at a hockey school in St. Andrews NB and after a game at Maple Leaf Gardens. I have a letter he wrote me that is truly one of my prized possessions. Dale, thank you for passing on your passion for hockey to so many young hockey players! I will miss that charming smile! My condolences to the entire Hawerchuk family. We truly lost an amazing individual way too soon!

I’d like to thank him for some of my most enjoyable evenings of my childhood.
Watching him dance around the Defense & then the goaltender where some of the most memorable moments of my youth. Has always been my favourite Jet. Will never forget his generosity staying to sign the last piece of paper or jersey for the young kids.
Thank you Dale. ❤

I was lucky enough to spend several hours with Dale in 1989. Our service club put on a fund raiser and we played the Winnipeg Jets a game to raise some money. Dale was the pitcher for the Jets and he was pretty good at that and few were able to make contact with the ball and even fewer made it to base. We had no runs and the Jets had 17. In the last inning I got up to bat and the 3rd pitch he threw I connected and put it over the fence. I not only got a pat on the back from my team mates but from the jets as well. After the game, both teams went to a members home and BBQd and had some beers. I sat beside Dale for most of the evening and he was truly a humble and a regular guy. This day will be one of the top 10 memories in my life. We all miss you Dale, till we meet again. Greg.

Some people just pack a lot of living into the short time they are here, I think it’s safe to say Dale was one of those people. I just want to say “thanks Dale” for the thrills and the pure joy of watching you play the game! Nine seasons with Winnipeg officially makes you family and we are so glad you came here. Soar high and skate fast Ducky, you will always be loved by your Winnipeg fans.

I've only had two sport heroes in my life... Michael Jordan and Dale Hawerchuk. Hawerchuk was the first hockey player (and athele for that matter) that I ever knew and the reason I am a Jets fan! I followed his entire career, collected his hockey cards, and used to love eating at his family restaurant in Arborg (Zans). My favorite memory will always be him jumping into the pile after Lemieux scored the final goal of the 1987 Canada Cup, but maybe more importantly for me personally - during the announcements of alumni players at the 1st Heritage game in Winnipeg, I got a great shot of him that aired live during the broadcast (one of only two games I've Camera Op'd on TV).
There aren't too many people that have become Legends in our province - but Ducky was one of them.
I've had the Campbell conference jersey for quite a few years - but was finally able to find a company to get the authentic stitching on it (circa 1984) just prior to the Heritage game in Regina. My only regret now is that I didn't get this jersey done sooner and get him to sign it.
This one really stings - RIP Ducky!!

I became a hockey fan the year prior to Dale being drafted by the Jets, and have so many great memories of those exciting Smythe Division games. Ducky was our hero, a leader, and I’ll never forget his amazing talent and the class he showed on and off the ice. Condolences to his family. RIP Dale, Manitobans will always remember you as one of our own.

Aaahh, Ducky! You were, to me, the one thing that made me watch hockey in U....every girl in Tache Hall thought you were the cutest hockey player!❤
I've learned, at that time and since, that you were an amazing hunan being and hockey player.
The hockey world and Winnipeg lost a terrific ambassador and a truly wonderful person.
We shall miss your grin and presence.
Rest easy, Ducky.
Our condolences to you, Eric and your family.

Being very close friends with Judy McKinnon automatically made me friends with her family. I met Dale soon after Crystal starting dating him and he impressed me immediately when he offered to visit my sick son in the hospital. My son literally screamed when his hockey hero walked in the room and has never stopped being a huge fan as the rest of the family are as well. A signed hockey jersey and stick have hung in my house and now my son’s house for many years. We spent many good times with Crystal and Dale. My heart hurts for the family. The world is a better place because such a great role model as Dale Hawerchuk was in it. Sincere condolences to you all.

I remember watching Dale as a teen on the Jets and then after he left the team but came back to play. It was also so great to get to see him play in a Jets jersey again for the Heritage Classic alumni game. He was such an amazing player. Condolences to all that loved him.

Posted by Crystal Cain    August 25, 2020

I met Dale a few times over the years and there is absolutely nothing bad you can say about the man. Not only was he a great hockey player but more importantly he was the kindest sports figure I have ever met. He went above and beyond not only helping young hockey players and always having time for charitable organizations even after his pro hockey career was over. You will always have a place in our hearts Dale you truly were one of a kind and Manitoba will always Love you.
Dale you would be very proud of your son Eric. He has told us stories and kept us informed since your passing and there is absolutely no doubt that Eric has Hawerchuk blood. You will be missed more than you could possibly know. You are and will always be Manitoba’s Great One

Posted by Chuck Reid - Friend   August 25, 2020

I was fortunate enough to meet Dale twice. The first time was when I was around 8 years old when we got to skate with the Jets. From that day forward he was “ my Dale” and my favourite Jet. No matter where he was, who he played for, he was a Jet player. I got to meet him again in 2017 when he was inducted to the Hall of Fame. I was so excited to meet him I hugged him - completely caught him off guard but he was gracious about it. And he was such a humble man. I was also so excited that I forgot to ask if he would sign my Jersey. But I did get a picture with him, which I will always treasure.
I was so incredibly sad to hear he was sick with cancer and even more so when he passed away. I can’t even begin to imagine the tremendous loss for his wife and kids. Rest easy, Dale. You will always be my favourite Jet.

Dale Hawerchuk is the reason I enjoy watching, playing and following hockey. His dedication to excel left his fans the opportunity to watch one of th best hockey players in the world. I remember my very first hockey game in 1983 and my uncle telling me "see that guy wearing number 10, keep your eyes on him". Well I did keep my eyes on him every shift and he was awesome to watch. Thank you Dale for giving me beautiful memories from the game I love so much! RIP.

I had the pleasure to meet Dale at the Winnipeg airport when I was about 9 or 10 years old. My uncle sat next to him on the plane and told him he was my favourite player and that I would be at the airport. Dale said he’s like to meet me. I was beyond thrilled!!! I got his autograph and said hi. I am now 40 years old and this experience is clear as day to this day. He was the reason that I wore #10 growing up playing sports. My deepest condolences to his family. All of Winnipeg grieves with you.

After he signed with the Jets he visited my family in Oshawa and drove his new corvette- a signing bonus, to my house and was grinning from ear to ear! I would like to express my sincerest condolences to the Hawerchuk family. I was lucky to have played with Dale in Cornwall on his first Memorial cup championship team. He was a "great" guy. The term great guy has to be earned. Not only was he incredibly talented, he was intelligent, humble, honest, and hard working. An inspiration to all.
Short story- when we won the first QMJHL championship we carried our coach on our shoulders because we had to -- then a bunch of 17-20 year old hoisted our 16 year old superstar on our shoulders because we wanted to. This was his teammates acknowledging their leader and friend.
God bless him and I hope you can find peace in knowing that he left a lasting impression on all who were lucky to know him.

I remember when he signed with the Winnipeg Jets at the corner of Portage and Main back in 1981 and he was only 18 years old. I sure remember that day and I said that kid will go all the way in the NHL. When ever you needed to get a autograph signed he always would sign it for you with a big smile on his face. He would never dissapoint you.I do remember when he got married to his wife. He got married in a church on Grant Ave in Winnipeg and the church he got married in was Holy Family in Winnipeg. Dale my brother RIP may your Winnipeg Jet wings fly with you forever. And I know you are looking down on your family right now.
