Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Jim by adding your memories and photos.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, prayers, flowers and cards remembering our father James Sutter. He was a father, Sonja's husband and a grandfather to Sorn, Stephen and Joseph. This is just a little summary of Jim's life: Dad was born in Kelso, Washington to a Leona and Fredrick Sutter. Things were very tight financially and incredibly stressful in the household for the WWI veteran, having seven children Henry, Edward, Leona, Harold Floyd (died near childbirth), James, Delores and Shirley. Disserting the family, Fred re-enlisted in the Army, before Shirley was born, joining Patton in WWII. Grandmother Leona with the help of her sons and daughters scraped by. Henry (Army) and Edward (Navy) during WWII, sent money home while dad, Leona, Delores and Shirley found work at home. Eventually dad joined the Airforce and sent money home to grandma.
Dad was an athlete in school he enjoyed football where he excelled as running quarterback, basketball where he had a nasty hook shot, baseball and later fast pitch softball. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, hunting and smelting in and around Mt. St. Helens area.
Sonja met Jim during a dance/Ball at the Knights of Columbus hall after he was discharged from the Service. Mom and Dad were married in 1959 right here in West Seattle. They moved briefly to North Seattle and had twin boys James and Michael. They moved back to West Seattle to be closer to mom's family in West Seattle and had two more children Karl and Launa. Living on 45th near Madison Middle School dad helped coach baseball teams his sons were on. He even wanted to have Launa on a Pee Wee team. He was never prouder than taking leftover players on a Little League team and winning most of their games that year.
Dad enjoyed his family in Kelso. We took family trips to help his mother repair and maintain her house. He could fix anything we thought. Trips were made for family gatherings, where his sisters were incredibly good cooks. When dad was out of work during Boeing layoffs, his brother, Edward would employ him at his dental practice on First Hill, when he could. Jim was welcomed into Sonja's Norwegian family even though he came from Finnish and Swiss/German immigrants. He liked camping with our aunts (Astrid and Ruby) and their families. Jim and Sonja got a trailer - that broke an axle coming home from one trip. Our mom and dad traveled to Hawaii to celebrate their anniversary. Eventually, they traveled to Norway to visit mom's relatives. Trip of a lifetime traveling from the Arctic Circle to south of Oslo. The food was fabulous, and he met lots of Sonja's relatives on grandmother and grandfather's side. Visiting churches, the Sorting (Parliament), and a hydroelectric facility in a mountain. When our Uncle Roald became sick, mom and dad helped take care of him. After Roald's passed away, they moved into the Fossland house on View Lane where Aunt Randi and Gyda (our babysitters) were born and he could tease neighbors Jack Miller (Husky's Deli) about throwing rocks on his roof and our friend, Mike Stacey.
Dad you will be missed, with all your courage, battling illness after illness and having challenges. You kept battling; you never gave up.
James, Michael, Karl, Launa
