I grew up watching him play football, he inspired me more than you'll ever know. It was amazing to see someone who looked just like me. I was inspired to go to college because I'd learned that it was okay to dream and set goals. I am praying that God provides his family with strength and peace during their time of need. He inspired countless people and will be greatly missed.

My sincere condolences to the Fred Dean family. I have not Fred since I left Louisiana Tech over 50 years ago but I am still shocked and hurt to hear of his transition. I saw him off the field as a gentle giant and on the field as a force to be reckoned with. My most memorable time was a ride with him from Grambling back to Ruston when I prayed for God to just let me get back in one piece because he drove so fast. I’m thrilled to learn that he became a spokesman for Christ. I imagine that was one his most crowning achievements.

I still vividly remember a very, very hot day in the early 1980s at Rocklin, CA where the 49ers were working out pre-season. Everyone was focused on #16, #42, and the other big-name stars. When they broke for lunch, one player stayed behind to sign autographs for the small army of kids who had been observing. This player had enormous biceps that were much larger than my thighs. I didn't recognize the player who was sweating profusely in the hot sun as he alone signed autographs for 15-20 minutes after his teammates took off to eat.

I remember thinking that he might be an obscure draftee or free agent who was basking in the glory of being in a pro football camp by signing autographs. I asked another fan who he was and he replied Fred Dean who was already an established NFL star. I always admired him for his willingness to make the kids happy by signing autographs that day.

RIP Fred Dean you left behind good memories.
