Ernest J. Leger, 60, of 141 Nahant Street, a prominent North Shore resident, died in October, 1975 in New England Medical Center, Boston, after a brief illness. His Funeral Mass was led by his brother, the Rev. Herbert J. Leger, pastor of St. Anne’s Church.

Mr. Leger, born July 21, 1915, was the president and co-owner of the North Shore News Company in Lynn, where he started as a newsboy 45 years ago, eventually leading to his position of Vice President at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Lynn area Chamber of Commerce, Lynn Rotary Club, The Knights of Columbus, Marblehead Lodge of Elks, The Boston Yacht Club, Salem Country Club, The Middlesex Club and The Atlantic Coast Independent Distributors Association (ACIDA).

An incorporator of Union Hospital, Lynn, he was past president and one of the founders of the Swampscott Boosters Club as well as a founder of the Swampscott Little League.

Mr. Leger was a treasurer and former chairman of the Lynn Redevelopment Authority.

Born in Lynn, son of the late James and Beatrice (Corkery) Leger, he made his home both in Lynn and Swampscott.

A graduate of St. Jean Baptist School in Lynn, he attended Boston Latin High School and was a graduate from Lynn Classical High School.

He leaves his wife, Edna (Hersey) Leger; four sons Ernest J. Leger, Richard E. Leger, Robert J. Leger, Michael A. Leger; a daughter, Mrs. Jeanne C. Hall; his brother, the Rev. Leger of Salem; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Tuson; eight grandchildren (including his favorite, Darcy) and two nieces.
