Acclaimed Austrian mathematician who was a major influence in modern number theory

Acclaimed Austrian mathematician Edmund Hlawka, a major influence in modern number theory, has died at age 92.

Hlawka's family says the renowned mathematician died on Feb. 19 in Vienna. A cause of death was not given, and it was unclear why the announcement came more than a week after his death.

Scholars have hailed Hlawka as one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century. He was a leading number theorist who did groundbreaking work on the geometry of numbers and analytic number theory.

Hlawka was born on Nov. 5, 1916. He was a visiting professor at Princeton University and the Sorbonne in Paris, and did most of his work at Vienna's Technical University.

Information on survivors and funeral arrangements was not immediately available Friday.
