Tribute & Message From The Family

Mr. Gibson died on May 14, 2009 following a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend who passed away too soon for those who greatly loved him.
Mr. Gibson was born May 8, 1935 in Red Springs, NC to Henry Nelson and Maude Jones Gibson. His early years were spent on his family's farm.
Mr. Gibson's career spanned 52 years in the textile industry working with various mills and yarn companies. The last 17 years were spent running his yarn sales company, The Glenn Gibson Company. He retired in 2005. Never one to sit still for long, he began driving a delivery truck for NAPA Auto Parts at age 71. He enjoyed working in both textile sales and auto parts delivery as it gave him the opportunity to meet and talk to many people from all over the world.
His faith and love of people encouraged him to serve in many capacities at St. Stephen United Methodist Church, where he was a charter member. He was on the Board of Trustees as well as other committees. Most recently he was the Co-Sunday School Superintendent. Through the church he participated on mission trips to both Jamaica and Belize. Additionally, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Friendship Trays. For 23 years, Mr. Gibson was a dedicated platelet donor with the American Red Cross.
A devoted family man, Mr. Gibson cherished his wife, children and extended family. He enjoyed traveling, mostly to Scotland where he saw the Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle on several occasions. He was a lifelong sports fan supporting the Brooklyn Dodgers as a youth and the Atlanta Braves and Duke Blue Devils as long as his family can remember.
Mr. Gibson was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sara Louise Gibson, brothers Thomas Allen Gibson, Charles Nelson Gibson and Earl Jones Gibson.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Helen Lacy Gibson of the home; sons, Glenn Gibson II of Charlotte and Stan Gibson and wife, Lori Heffner Gibson, grandchildren Lavin Olivia Heffner Gibson, Zevi Adilade Heffner Gibson and Elias Murray Heffner Gibson of Rock Hill, SC; daughter, Kristen Gibson Powell and husband, Jeremy Powell and granddaughter Addison Grace Powell of Atlanta, GA; sister, Johnita Weeks of Jacksonville, FL; and countless family and friends.
A memorial service celebrating Mr. Gibson's life will be held at St. Stephen UMC on Sunday, May 17th at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte, Matthews Help Center, Friendship Trays or the Pastor Relief Fund at St. Stephen United Methodist Church.
The family would like to thank family and friends who have been so caring and supportive during Mr. Gibson's illness. Special thanks go to Dr. Wendy Brick and her wonderful staff at Mecklenburg Medical Clinic Oncology.
