Condolence & Memory Journal

To Don's family: We were really sorry to learn of Don's passing. I was a schoolmate of his & our mothers' worked together at DuPont. I knew his sister. We know he's in a better place, but it's still difficult to give them up.

Shirley - you're my hero! You have been a pillar of strength and such a model of grace and love during Don's battle. It's hard to imagine what life would be like without my husband - but I know it could happen and I only have to remember to lean on God. I know you know this too! Don had invited us to your house this summer for a BBQ (as I can see he is famous for!) ... but we'll just have to wait til we're all in heaven. Surely heaven condones BBQ! I miss seeing you - but I hope things have settled down a bit and you are doing well. Jeff & I are sure Don is advocating for all BMT and cancer patients everywhere! Love and prayers to you and your entire family.

We were part of a roving construction crew
in the 60's and 70's in the Columbia district. All of us who worked around him
have fond and pleasant memories of all those
days that we spent building the old style
phone lines in all kinds of weather. My
condolences to the family. We will miss him.

I first met Don at Cracker Barrel. This was more than two years after his diagnosis and he was full of life. Although our conversation was brief, Don inspired me with his attitude and bearing. He continued to be an inspiration for me during my struggle. Don will be missed.
My sincerest condolences to Shirley and the family. Thank you for being there in so many ways.

Don and I became like brothers starting when he was 13. He was the hardest working man I ever knew and the way he fought cancer, proved to also be the toughest man I ever knew.
He told me he wished all his buddies at "The Shop" could find Jesus. We made tenative plans to share the Word with them.

My heart weeps for the loss of my buddy and Shirley's loss; yet my spirit leaps for joy knowing he is with Our Jesus.

We shared love, laughter, mischief and prayers, in that order, that I'll always enjoy recalling.

We would share what blessed marriages we had. I hope my wonderful wife never has to face what his devoted wife,Shirley, went through. Blessed he was, with Shirley, Jan, sons and grandkids, not to mention a loving mom and dad who I felt were mine.

Goodbye My Buddy. I'll see you when God takes me home.

Shirley,
I am so sad to hear of Don's passing. Many many memories in my life have him in them. Dad and I were talking and I realized I don't know life with out alot of those "shop" men. He was a wonderful person with a heart of gold. I remember when he shaved his head and started wearing it that way, I called him Daddy Warbucks and he gave me a quarter, told me he was no Daddy Warbucks! I have great memories of that wonderful bbq. When I had a wreck in high school dad couldn't get to me but Don did. I will be in out of town this weekend but want you to know I am thinking of you, as you celebrate the life of a wonderful man!
Love,
Dee

Don said that when he retired, he was going to buy a new Harley, ride it to work on his last day at work, and "ride off into the sunset", and that was exactly what he did. I worked with Don from 2000 until he retired, as the Office Assistant for Columbia Engineering/Construction, and now only Engineering.

Shirley and T Jay,
We are very sorry for your loss. Although, we were only around him a few times, Don treated us like we were old friends. We enjoyed being with him. We know what a fine man he was and all the things he did that benefited others from listening to T Jay talk about him. No doubt you'll both miss him but you'll keep his memory alive with all the "Remember Whens". Just wanted you to know you're in our thoughts.

I remember meeting Don as he opened his house and his heart to a large group of Zetas for a summer reunion in Nashville in 2009. He cooked a BBQ banquet that would have put Corky's (or any fabulous bbq restaurants) to shame! He took our picture on the playground, and then stayed in the shadows so we could reminesce and sing. I wish I could have gotten to know him better that evening. What a nice, nice guy!

To Shirley: My prayers are with you at this most difficult time and remember your family and friends will be by your side.
