I have been a fan since the70's when I was just a teenager. Throughout the years I have been in love with the music of the famous couple,Ashford and Simpson. Your music has always touched me soul and I was so in awe of the love that was evident between the two of you.
Valerie my deepest sympathy as I know the pain you are in. I also have lost my mate four years ago. I felt like all the air was taken away from me. A very dear friend told me earlier this year that what I must do now is to live my life in a way to honor his memory and what was shared between the two of us. This way only one life is lost, not two. May God continue to bless you and your family.
Love to you,
A loyal fan.

He was your Business Partner, your Friend, your Soulmate, your Husband and Father to your 2 daughters. Therefore, your loss is much greater. May you find comfort from your extended family of fans. Most importantly, comfort from the scripture found at 1 Corinthians 1:3,4 Please allow..."the God

"Gimme Something Real" I found out about your music, during the Motown years. But then I found out from "The Real Thing" that you and Valerie wrote "Let's Go Get Stoned" for Ray Charles and California Soul" which was recorded by The 5th Dimension, even before your Motown years. My favorite song of yours is "Mainline". But the song that means the most
to me is "Gimme Something Real" because that's what I was looking for in 1973 and what I'm looking for now. To Valerie: As Nick wrote
in "Harden Not Your Heart"
Somewhere in the quietness there a voice will speak to you telling you exactly what to do.
At first you'll feel hopeless blind,
but if you don't look behind the mountain in
front of you will fall.

I am a hugh Ashford and Simpson fan. I had the pleasure of meeting them both years ago at Joe Williams home in New Haven, CT. I took a picture with them which I treasure. I could not believe how nice they both were.
My children grew up listening to their music because I played it all the time. Two of my favorites are "Send It" and "Loose Me". I had the pleasure of seeing them perform a summer Concert in the park during the summer of '09 in Hamden, CT. I took some beautiful pictures of that performance not knowing I would not have the opportunity to see them both perform together again. I will teasure those pictures forever.
Val, you are blessed to have met your soul mate. You are blessed to have had the opportunity to share 38 wonderful years with him. Not many of use have had that opportunity.

NEW YORK, Monday, August 29: This evening at The Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, Memorial services took place for Mr. Nick Ashford, one-half of the talented song writing/ performing team Ashford and Simpson, who died last week at 70. The ceremony was attended by celebrities from the world of TV, Fashion, Entertainment, and Arts. Over one thousand people attended the service, a few hundred gathered on the closed to traffic block where Abyssinian Church is. This was New York's way of showing their love to the creative geniuses that wrote such romantic tunes as "Solid as a Rock" and many others. When Valerie was leaving the church, a crowd gathered around her, overwhelmed by the attention and the flashes, she raised her right hand as a symbolic gesture to acknowledge and thank the crowd for all the love she was receiving. It was a very emotional moment. Everyone stayed silent as she enters her car and leaves. Fernando Natalici

His Journey's Just Begun

Don't think of him as gone away,
his journey has just begun.
Life holds so many facets,
this earth is only one.

Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears,
in a place of warmth and comfort,
where there are no days and years.

Think of how he must be wishing
that we could know, today,
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of him as living
in the hearts of those who lives he touched
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much.

That night as Nick walked on to the stage, the ladies went wild. Val in her cool, calm way said, "Ladies, Ladies. He's all mine."

As a professional photographer I had the honor to photograper the duo from directly in front of the stage. Pictures of Nick and Val are proudly displayed in the portrait galary of my website.

God bless you and bring you peace. Always know that you had the best and treasure the memories. Smile and say you are bless to have had a real man one that every woman dreams of. I visted the Sugar bar in the Spring of 2010. It was my sister's birthday and as Nick and Valerie were leaving they were so lovely and graciously waited for me to snap a quick photo with them. That is my most recent memory however many years ago, in the late 80's, I used to work on 51st between York and First. Part of my commute from the train at Lexington heading to the office was to pass their home where, if I was lucky, I would see Nick putting their daughter on a little yelow school bus. It was adorable to see and it was a lovely memory which I'll always cherish. I loved them both, from a distance, and always felt they were "family" to me. Val, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Ashford family. To be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD.Nick has been birthed back to heaven from whence he came.He is gone from sight but lives on in the faces of his children,in the legacy of music and the love of his beautiful, talented and equally gifted wife,Valerie.
I remember seeing them at the Universal Hilton on Friday when they were checking in and then going to the show and watching how attentive Nick was when Val had a wardrobe malfunction, they continue to perform like the true professionals they were.I then saw them in the elevator on Saturday enroute to the show and I told them I had put some safety pins in my purse just in case and I was on the front row, they laughed and said "thank you and they would remember"so when they were performing Nick actually nodded and smile when he saw me.So down to earth, you could see the CHRIST in them.Nick will be missed by his many fans but I am ever so grateful for the memories and the music.REST in HEAVEN Nick.
May your Faith be a blanket of comfort around you Valerie,Nicole and Asia as you go through this storm-earth has no sorrow that heaven cant heal.Praying with you and for you and those related by kin and friend.

On behalf of Frankie's Angels, I would like to send our deepest sympathy to Valerie and family. I saw the group when attending a Maze Concert; they were the opening act at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland. I had never been so impressed. My husband got out all the Asford an Simpson cd's and started playing them. They had laid the foundation. The happy feelings started with them and ended with Maze. It was one of my best concert nights having two great entertainers on one show. Now Nick has become a singing angel in heaven who join the ranks of many others. God bless and I pray that the wonderful memories will bring the family many happy feelings.

I was born in Detroit and was raised in the Motown heyday era of the 60's. Always loved the artist of that time.....Marvin Gaye & Tammi....I would listen to those duets over and over again....no one has written a hotter tune than "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" since then.....Nick's lyrics always said so much. The songs are infectious and will always be a part of my music library. My 14 year old son likes the music as well! I will continue to keep this legacy alive. My prayers are with Val and the girls. I saw Ashford and Simpson perform as many times as I could when they came to Maryland. The attitude, charisma, connection, love so evident between them when they performed was magnetic. At one concert, he ran up one side of the aisle and Valerie ran up another. As he dazzled past me in that chained T-shirt, I couldn't help but reach out and run my hands across his chest. My ex didn't speak to me for about a week because as Nick LOL!RIP you wonderful man, and may God bless his family and friends, especially Val and children.

I have known the Ashford's all of my life. Living down the street we would love when Ashford and Simpson came to town because they would end up at his parents house. We would just sit and wait for the limo to pass and down the street we would go. He was such a loving man. And when some of his old classmates would stop by and act shy to approach him, he would call them by name and say "come on over here!" Nick was the first person inducted into Willow Run High School Hall of Fame!!!! I was at work when I received the text that he had passed; I know my heart stopped. I just want the entire Ashford family to know that they are all in my prayers and I know God will mend your broken hearts.

Love You All,

I remember the very first time that I heard Ashford & Simpson on the VHS in the 1980's. I had my mom to buy me some more of their music because I thought they were the sexiest couple I had ever seen together. He was a chocolate tall and pretty eyed man and she was a short brown-skinned beautiful woman,I thought they made beautiful music together and they looked and performed very well. Mrs. Ashford my prayers go out to you and your family in your time of lost and remember God's words at this very special time in you and your childrens loss.Let anyone that wishes take life's water free.Rev. 22:17.
An open invitation has been extended to humans by means of holy spirit. The invitation is to come and satisfy one's thirst with a very special type of water. It is not ordinary water composed of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. Though literal water is essential for sustaining life on earth, Jesus had in mind a different type of water when he said to a Samaritan woman at a well: Whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty at all, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water bubbling up to impart everlasting life. (John 4:14) The extraordinary water that humans are invited to partake of imparts everlasting life. The water of life represents all of God's provisions for recovering obedient humans from sin and death and giving them unending perfect life in Paradise on earth.1John 4:9,10.

I remember watching BET one day when Ashford and Simpson were on with Kindred Family soul..and, I remember them asking Ashford and Simpson if they ever fight, and Mrs Valerie said, "Like cats and dogs, but when we go on stage we are professional, even if we are still mad. " And, I remember the look in Mr. Nick's eyes when he looked at Mrs. Valerie, and said with the biggest smile, "But, we don't stay mad long." He had so much love in his eyes that day, and I remember thinking, wow, he really loves her! As a fan, I will always remember how wonderful you treated your wife in public. As a woman, I will always remember the impression you left on my heart that day. Thank you for being a wonderful example of what a woman should look for in a real, black man! We grieve the loss, yet celebrate the gift of Nicholas Ashford, and his beautiful wife, Valerie Simpson, to this world. As a teen during the '70's, your musical messages and togetherness taught me so much about what to look for in love, and what true love OUGHT to be. Today, after a 30-year "division", I am married to the very soulmate I used to dream about while listening to your music, especially, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Your words left an indelible imprint on my life, and unspeakable gratitude in my heart. Thank you for all of your years of commitment to each other and to your art. May God bless the Ashord-Simpson family and loved ones, and blanket them in His powerful comfort, strength and love. And, to Nicholas Ashford, thank you, take a bow, and be at peace.

1978, Truth Hall on the campus of SC State College-- as you stepped off the elevator after a long day of classes, you could smell Sandlewood incense, hear "Solid" blarring in our suite, and we knew that all was well. The beautiful couple that graced the album cover made this caramel colored sister long for a dark chocolate beauty like Nick Ashford: handsome, sauve, and ever-so-obviously in love with his wife, its what every girl longs for. It makes me proud to have known his genius, his creativity, his joy of song. He will be greatly missed...

I remember as a little girl listening to my mother play R&B. One of my favorite songs was COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS. Til this day it is still one on my favorites songs. This song has so much power in it , I HAD TO LEARN TO LISTEN AND NEVER FORGET TO COUNT MY BLESSINGS. Nick was a blessing no matter how hard it is to except, he was blessing from GOD . GOD knows best , Nick put GOD first and GOD put Nick first. GOD knows our happiness , our sorrow , our pain , our joy and our sadness. All of those things are of GOD. They came from him and so they shall return back to him . Nick , your pain has ended and now you can rest in the arms of your ANGEL. May you find peace and comfort in the arms of your ANGEL.

Sincerely,
Teresa

My memories are for the times when I would sit and admire the love vibrations that I received from them; it made me go wake my husband up and tell him to hold me and dance with me - even though he is not a dancer. We would enjoy their video for hours, Ashford and Simpson. They were on a romance mission. I am praying Mrs. Ashford's strength in the Lord, for her and their daughters and their family. They say Mr. Ashford was very kind to all people off and on the stage. What a sweetheart, he always gave God Glory for blessing his life. That is what I admired about their interview, he told his humble beginnings going to the church where he received food and a partner for life, his wife, Valerie; she promoted beauty in that man that was unmatched, unreal. Beautiful Black man, Nick Ashfor. Thank you Jesus for blessing them to bless us with real clean sweet love. What an honor, Buddie Denise Drake He may be gone, but not forgotten. Rest In Peace

To My Sister in Christ Valerie

The Hands of God 8-22-2011

When grieving one's loss, has you all ado
If hurting so deeply, it's woes or betides you
In the Hands of God, you'll surely find
Security, comfort, even true peace of mind.

Lean on Gods Hands, he'll ever understand,
Place all worries and loss, into Gods hands
God does not tire of you, always looking here
Resting in God's hands with nothing to fear.

Think of the comfort, solace and pleasure
All of life's worries, gone in their measure,
If loss of someone, throws pain at you
Place all in God's hands, through and through.

There's nothing his love cannot yet understand
No more pleasing a place found then God's hands
Whatever belief or race, whatever your creed
Place solely in God's Hands your every need.

Feel the air of serene grace, surrounding all of you
Within his hands lies sweet rest, beautifully and true
All gone ahead before you, family or friends
Rest in God's hands, in the love that he never stops lending.

All thoughts relayed here, are directed to you and the family
To bring to All of you comfort, yet console you today
Is the sweeter comfort of God's hands will abound
Day, Tomorrow and Always!

Always loving, sharing and caring,
God's Blessings and His Love! Your Sister In Christ Honee-B

They were super soul artists and a fantastic duo back in the day. I admired their loyalty and togetherness throughout their career in an industry that destroys so many others. Growing up as a young, and conscious black male in the Black Awareness era of the 70's I came to respect the music they wrote ...not only for themselves, but for so many others; which to me was astounding.Nick..If there's a musical heaven...I know they will be playing your songs "On Any...and Every Street Corner" !

Tonight I got on the internet and ordered 5 cd's - your music is wonderful and will always be cherished in our hearts. We will be spendning the weekend of Sept 25th celebrating my sister's 50th birthday and listening to your music the entire weekend - please know how much you are loved and how badly we feel about Nick. Please keep your music alive - I know we will! love to you.

I have loved Ashford & Simpson since I was growing up in the 70s, and 80s. The music they made together was classic and magical & the music they made for others is legendary. Everytime I saw Nick Ashford he reminded me of "black Jesus". Their marriage & chemistry together is what I strived to have one day in my own life. My prayers & sympathy go out to his beautiful wife Valerie & their daughters, family, friends & host of fans. He will be missed and may you rest in peace, Nick...

The world has, once again, lost one of its greats. Thankfully, through one of Nick's best friends who worked with him, Edward Figueroa, I was able to meet Nick & Val YEARS ago after one of their shows in Oakland, CA. I continued to attend many shows after that and made sure that I sent flowers backstage for them each time just to show my appreciation for their love and talent. They were the epitome of class and style and so warm and receptive. Thank God I just saw them in concert in San Francisco this past March. Their performance was just like in the past...cool, sexy, exciting and warm. I will surely miss him and all that he gave to his fans. May God continue to bless Val, his daughters Nicole and Asia, and the rest of his family and friends during this time of sorrow.

I know the family quite well, especially Mother Ashford who still lives in the area, as well as, Albert and Paul his brothers. I last saw Nick and Valerie is 2009 when they came to Ypsilanti to perform a concert for the Christ Temple Baptist Church, formerly Willow Run Baptist Church. As usual they did an outstanding job, and sang the crowd happy. Nick will be missed by all. Please keep his memories close in your heart and mind. I will. New York City post-9/11 has never been the same. Sadly, now, New York City post Nick Ashford will not be the same either. The sight of Ashford and Simpson walking down the west side (or floating down the west side more aptly) was always mesmerizing, and a regular occurrence. They emanated everything that is grand in a human being, in a couple. They were the quintessential and ideal couple, handsome, successful, talented, kind, generous: their presence made you feel happy, blessedin love. One day the phone rang, Valerie was on the other end (she was always the outspoken one). They had heard I had just acquired a LINN DRUM machine (this was the 8o's!) and they were curious and wanted to know more about iti'll never forget that instant. Whether running into them in the studios or on 72nd street near their club, their presence was magnetic, their love palpable.
You are missed Nickolas, and our thoughts are with you and your family Valerie...

They don't write songs like how Nick Ashford used to. He represented what was best in song writing, especially as a black man. That's what gave me the most pride - he was a black man who was able to write songs about life, love, loss without being negative and demeaning. His talent will be missed but never forgotten. His legacy, besides his family, will be songs that will and have stood the test of time - Solid as a Rock is his musical legacy.

Nick was one of the sweetest kindest people ever know! I thank god for him as he and his wife mrs Valerie Simpson are responsible for me doing my first solo show as an emerging artist.

Nick had a special way about him, always had away of giving you information that you could use to take you to the next level as an artist...

He would come to just about every show and afterwards we would sit and talk and he would give pointers on what to do to make the show better... He would say your already fabulous but do this and this would make it even better so I credit ASHFORD & SIMPSON for making me a better artist!

Nick and Val has giving me the best advice and there nurturing spirit keeps me on top of my ame as a Vocalist, Person, Artist for all of there guidance I'm proud to say he was my friend and boss!

Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson wrote songs that were the soundtrack to my life and many, many others. I have been blessed to see them in concert on 4 different ocassions and each time it was truly an exceptional experience. I could go on and on about how much I love the music; how I've enjoyed the concerts and how my best friend of over 35 years still argue over Ashford and Simpson cds. But what I most want to express to Valerie Simpson,Mrs.Nick Ashford, is how truly sorry I am for the loss of your Husband; Your childrens Father and I know, Your Best Friend. The universe placed two very talented people together and you shared your spirits with the world.
Thank You for leaving such wonderful words and music.

One of my favorite memories would be a lyric (and song title), 'As long as it holds you in it's power, you've got to give it all every hour. As long as it holds you in it's sweetness, you can forget the rest."
So many of your songs were about God's, brotherly and Eros; every form of LOVE of is. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.

What a great songwriter, performer, businessman and husband!

Haven't seen or spoken to Nick since the early 70's. We were neighbors and spent many a day hanging and chilling on Central Park West.
My ex sent this last night "Gosh yes before we had gone up to Nick's apartment (Town House), he was trying to get the baby grand up there and it would not fit through the doorways so he hired this crane thing and they dismantled his window and got it in through there."
Those were good times!

It was like he was gliding down the street. I used to playAshford & Simpson's song with the lyrics; "Is it still good to you?" all the time. To me they were the epitome of a happy African American couple--the kind that the papers at that time never acknowledged existed. My sincere condolences to his wife Valerie and their two daughters. Another memory...late 70's...Greensboro, NC at Aycock Auditorium on Univ.NC-G campus. I was at your concert...front row seat...presented to Nick my design illustrations of stage costumes for both of you with my credentials on the back. Response was given to visit both of you on my next NY trip to talk to your designer Scott Barrie. A visit to NY the next year to see the designer was unsuccessful. But, 4 years later, I met Nick crossing 3rd Ave in front of Bloomingdales (where I worked) I spoke to him & breifly expressed my desire to design for he and you Val. He was so nice...gave me the music studio address to contact. I did & again no success. I must say those two occassions will always be with me. Like another fan wrote Val, I had dreams of Nick & myself being successful. That was then but seeing the two of you happily married singing and performing so many years for all of your fans has been a Blessing. Hope this has been a "Happy Ending" for the family of Nick Ashford with lots of fond memories to carry on his legend. I'll truly miss him, my condolences and love to the family.

The most recent was July 31 when I was travelling to a conference. I played 2 CDs of all of your hit songs. I sang all of them driving up the mountains alone. I didn't realize that I had travelled so high.
"Ain't No Mountain High" helped me during this journey. God has a way of preparing us and I'm so glad I played the songs because I can only imagine what has been going on this month for Val and the family. My deepest condolences to the family, surely he will be greatly missed!
As only a fan and a frequent customer at sugar bar, I still have a great memory of Nick Ashford. I am not sure how many years ago, but at least 10, I was at a private party at another famous singer's home in manhattan, when Nick and Valerie came in,Valerie went directly over to the Baby Grand piano, and was singing for the guests, in the living room my husband and I were mingling and talking with other guests, then NickAsford walked into get something to eat, bigger than life, and a smile that lit up the room. My husband knew how much I loved Ashford and Simpson, and told me to go over and talk, I wouldn't bother him, so instead he recognized my husband from years ago, and came over to us... What a sweet, nice man, we spoke for a little while, and I just remember how so down to earth and real he was, he made my nite! Thanks for a great memory and let the Lord welcome and love you.

when I was about twenty years old i ran across a busy street to get to the store, I noticed a yellow limosine passing by and I wondered who could that be, after I left the store i returned to the bar were i was shooting pool and suddenly thiis very tall very hairy gentleman walked in and started walking toward me, he asked if he could speak to me for a moment and i somewhat reluctantly agreed. He said that his name was cornilious and that he was in town to do a show and he asked if i wanted to go, now you have to understand that ashford and simpson were my two favorite artist of all time, i had all of their albums and i dreamed of replacing valarie and changing the name from asford and simpson to asford and cufee(no offense valarie). however this man looked nothing like my idol and i was quite skeptical. but then he asked me to step outside and much to my surprise and amazement there sat the yellow limo shinning like ciderella]s couch. We sat and talked for a while and when he was ready to leave he sad that he would call me someday. six months later he called and asked if I wanted to come to san francisco to see him in concert. I need to tell you that this man made this girl happier then any human could ever be and he remained a gentleman thru out, I will never forget him and i will hold him in my heart till my dying day and beyond. My love and prayers go out to his family and fans, This man will be truly missed

You could tell they had something very special, magnetism and by having such a great relationship their performance was a reflection of that. After moving to New York to begin a new job that offered a lot of unknowns and put fear in my heart, I happened down one of the finer new york streets in the upper 70's. Perched in the window of a brownstone was Nick Ashford. He quickly noticed my upset and kindly utter "good morning". I quickly tried to hide my tears but he asked me if I was alright. I began to blubber and he began to encourage. What he said to me was so very comforting, that I was able to move through my challenges in hopes of achieving the success I wanted. It just so happened that I was looking for a particular address on that street. I was lost and late for an appointment. When I told him who I was looking for he pointed to the brownstone next door and said; "see...you were supposed to meet me today!" So kind, so gentle and so inspiring. It was my absolute pleasure to have encountered Nick Ashford. Rest in Peace.

Fly With The Angels, and continue to make your beautiful music from the other side of the Veil. Enjoyed the Ashford-Simpson experience at a concert several years ago, and always planned to go to the Sugar Bar, but never did--time is so short and moves so quickly. Didn't know you were sick--could have prayed for you. Condolences and Blessings to your lovely wife and family. You'll be missed by many. Thank God your music will be forever.
