Condolence & Memory Journal

I write this years later, I thought of Lt. MACKAN last night and thought I would look him up on line, I was very sad to learn of his passing. I served with him on Diego Garcia and with him in NMCB-133 at Gulfport, Ms. I have fond memories of "Mad dog" as we called him and I express my greatest sorry at not getting in touch with him sooner. To his family I express my deepest condolences.

Knew Mike since we were children, grew up on same street, same classes as young Catholic kids. Great guy. My first gift from a young man (in our pre-teen years) was a box of chocolate covered cherries for Valentine's Day from Mike! Many good memories always. God Bless as you rest in peace with your Dad and Sister.

Mike was a great mentor, teacher, and above all, friend. He helped me get into residency and get through it. Of course, he got me hooked to the Kentucky Derby as well! He will be truly missed and I will always remember him.

It's been over 30 years since Dr. Mike Mackan taught me in the emergency room, first as a medical student, then a resident. I remember his kindness, patience and thoroughness with both his patient care and teaching --no matter how crazy or hectic the ER was. It was a privilege to know and work with him. Please accept my deepest sympathies on your loss.

I worked with Mike from the time he returned from the Navy until he retired. He was a great colleague and friend. I remember him as a very compassionate physician who always developed an amazing rapport with his patients. He also had an amazing ability to memorize medical facts & differential diagnoses. We had great times together tailgating at the OSU games. He is truly missed. I had the pleasure of working with Michael as a nurse in the ED. His love of people was inspiring. How I miss the big hug & kiss that he would give whenever he saw a friend. He is well loved.

I had the joy of working with Mike throughout his residency and as an attending in the ER at ACH. He was clearly one of the best ER physicians I have known. He will be and has been missed. I am sorry for your loss.

Mike was such a dear friend, so kind and thoughtful. The last time we "hung out" together was at Mitch's Lounge on Exchange st. We've thought about him so often the past few years. We really miss him.

We know you will be riding with the winning jockeys at the Kentucky Derby, pushing the Brown forward for a win and most of all watching over OSU. When Jim stuffs the pepper jars he will look up and say Mike I need your help. Will miss your smile and witty ways. Had great times with you at our camper. Jim & Paula Halas

To Dr. Mackan's Family, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Mackan when he first started working at Akron City Hospital ED. He was always kind, caring and compassionate to all of us: patients, coworkers and those fortunate to be in his care during their ED visits. He saved my husband's life when he was having a major heart attack. We think the world of him. He will be missed. In sympathy and friendship, Marvin and Diana

I met Mike in 1978 when he returned to ACH from the Navy and I had just finished my medical residency. I worked with him for a year in the ED and later through the years as colleagues in the medical community. His abilities to rapidly assess and treat a patient were uncanny. He left a huge footprint on this earth and will remain an inspiration to all who knew him for his abilities and his humanity.

Megan and Bethany- I spoke with my mom today and she told me about the passing of your dad. I wanted to tell you both how sorry I am for your loss. Your dad was a great guy and will be deeply missed by many. I still remember all of the fun things your dad did with us when we were kids….the Billy Idol concert, Geauga Lake, Cedar Point, etc. I hope you both are able to focus on all of the good times you had with your dad; it will help you get through the tough times you are facing right now. I only say this based on experience since I lost my dad 2 years ago this December. I wish you and the rest of your family all of the best.
