Tribute & Message From The Family

Roy Charles Ertz, 89, of Burlington, died at 2:05 am Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born May 12, 1922, in Burlington, he was the son of Frederick Reed and Helen Katherine Logan Ertz. On March 7, 1943, he married Elizabeth E. "Betty" Hopewell in Garden City Army Air Force Base in Garden City, KS.  She died February 4, 2005.

Roy was self-employed.

He was a 1940 graduate of St. Paul's Catholic High School . He attended many military schools.

Roy served in the Army Air Corps and the Iowa National Guard as a pilot. He retired with the rank of Captain.  He was a "Hump Pilot" during World War II.  He was a fixed and rotary wing Master Aviator with over 20,000 flight hours.

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #52. He was an avid gardener.  

Survivors include five sons, Roy Thomas Ertz of Glendale, AZ, Robert "Bo" Ertz of Columbia, MO, Timothy James Ertz of Summerville, AL, Mark George Ertz of Burlington, and Joseph Milburn Ertz of Peoria, AZ; three daughters, Mary Hope Cho of Aiea, HI, Angela Joyce Angeron of Hammond, LA, and Martha Lynn Smith of Hammond, LA; two brothers, Eugene W. "Bill" Ertz of Burlington, and John M. Ertz of Escondido, CA; one sister, Margaret E. Cullen of Newark, DE; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Paul and Warren Ertz, one grandson, Nathan Ertz, and one great grandson Mitchell Ertz.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 4:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at  Hass-Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Ertz will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Anthony J. Herold, V.F. as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at the church. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with a fly by.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Paul's cafeteria following the interment.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Burlington Notre Dame or the Great River Christian School for tuition help for students.
