Clint Elmo Reed, 94 of Benton, KY., passed away Monday, April 22, 2013, at 11:40 p.m. at the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard, Kentucky.

Born in his home in Brewers, KY, in 1918, Mr. Reed was a music prodigy at age eight and was hired to play for local dances. By the age of 10, he owned his own team of mules, and farmed 10 acres. After graduating with a B.S. in Music from Murray State University, he entered military service as a member of the 83rd Artillery Division Band in WWII. With other members of his unit, he escaped from behind enemy lines in the Battle of the Bulge.

After completing his Master Degree at Columbia University in New York, he achieved a Professional Degree from Julliard School of Music and played string bass with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Indianapolis Philharmonic Orchestra and the Fort Wayne Symphony. He also played jazz with the Enoch Light Orchestra during the Big Band era in New York.

He was a professor of Music Theory at Butler University and later taught music in the Marshall County, KY, school system, retiring from the faculty at Murray State University, as well. He was nationally recognized for contributions to the use of the Classic Guitar in the classroom. Mr. Reed, a creative inventor, also won the Cumberland Award for development of the technology to allow three-point PTO driven tractor equipment to be utilized by teams of horses.

Mr. Reed is pre-deceased by his father and mother, Cliff and Nina Cole Reed and three sisters, Hazel Park, Wilna Park, and Hester Stone, and one granddaughter, Adrienne Reed.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris Lee Odell Reed, three sons, Harry Reed of Benton, Paul and David Reed of Louisville, and two daughters, Lee Ann Reed of Marianna, FL, and Joyce Reed Brown of Vinton, VA. He has 9 grandchildren, Mark, Ryan, Melanie, Carson, Madison, and Rachel Reed, and Mathew and Andrew Brown. He has 5 great grandchildren, Nathan, Blake, Jake, Reilly, and Kylie.

Visitation will be at Collier Funeral Home in Benton from 5-8 on Friday, April 26th with the funeral held on Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Collier Funeral Home. Rev. David Atkinson will officiate. Interment with military honors are to follow in the Lyles Cemetery in Benton.
