Alan Lindsay Arey, 73, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017.



Born May 17, 1943 in Mt. Holly, New Jersey he was a son of the late Richard and Patricia Kane Arey. In addition to his parents Alan was predeceased by his brother Patrick.



Alan attended Reed College and Portland State University in Oregon before graduating from the University of Virginia Law School in 1976. He practiced law in Chatham, Virginia before moving to Charlottesville.



He was an active member of The Rebelious Dogs A.A. Group and the Charlottesville Stamp Club since 2010, Monticello Coin Club, and the Shenandoah National Pilatelic Society. Members of these organizations enjoyed learning so much from Alan.



Alan will be sorely missed by his brother Stephen and his wife Judy of Waynesboro; sister, Kathleen Carroll of Fredericksburg; uncle, Robert Kane, III of Pearisburg; sister-in-law, Pamela Arey of Severna Park, Md.; and his nieces and nephews, Jeremy Arey, Jeffrey Arey and his wife Reina, Amanda Arey, Anne Arey, Molly Arey, John Arey and his wife Becky, and Lindsay Parvis and her husband Matt.



A funeral service will be conducted 11:00am Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the Teague Chapel in Charlottesville.



The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00pm Monday, March 20, 2017 at the funeral home.



A graveside service will be conducted 2:00pm Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Chatham.



Honorary pallbearers are Alan’s close friends from A.A. and the Charlottesville Stamp Club.



In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Alan’s memory to Washington and Lee School of Law Robert R. Kane Scholarship Fund, 1 Denny Circle, Lexington, VA 24450.
